I just moved into my new apartment and Charter Communications is the only provider availible here. Their basic internet is $19.99 with speeds 'up to 1mbps'. For $10 more I can get speeds 'up to 5mbps'. Seems like a good deal right? When it comes to speeds, I am not looking for anything extreme. I want something that I can get on my ps3 and play online with, surf the internet with, chat on msn, and maybe even juggle a few videos on youporn while I switch between them fapping - all without any lagging. Will '1 mbps' suffice or should I stop being a bastard and upgrade to the '5mbps' to meet my needs. I figured I could ask them but I have a feeling they might say '5mbps' reguardless . Thank you nerds.
I would call them and ask how long it takes for an upgrade from 1 to 5. Then start at the 1meg and see how you like it. If not good, have them bump you to 5.
I have 5 with Charter and it's so so. Cable is a shared media so the response times can vary depending on how many others are on.
Advertised speeds aren't necessarily the real speeds you'll get once it's installed. I'd suggest going with the 1mbps, then if it's not fast enough upgrade from there. You won't know until you're using it whether or not it'll be good enough.
I talked to the guys and they are coming in tomarrow to put in the 1mbps. They told me it took about a minute to 'upgrade' to the 5mbps if I wanted, so I figured id give it a try.
If it's anything like Charter service here get used to random 3-4 hour outages every damn day. My Charter internet and cable have been teh fial lately. On Demand has been down since Tuesday and my internet was out all day Saturday.
