I need an awesome computer/video game screen......
I guess I posted in the wrong section before. Maybe I'll get more help in here. I doubt the deal I found is still going but I need ideas or experiences.
I have decided to move my game systems to the office and out of the living room. I guess I am growing up a little. Approximate viewing distance is 8 feet. I have plasmas in the rest of the house but an LCD in there now which is going to my mom's house. I will not be watching much if any regular TV in there. I have a cordless keyboard and mouse that sit on the coffee table so I need to be able to read the screen from 8 ft away. I'll play with the fonts so don't worry about screen size going over 40-47 inches. We have Netflix so I would like to be able to watch movies online if I wanted to. It will mostly be PC and gaming (consoles). I might let the little guy hook up a DVD player in here to watch that damn Finding Nemo. There is a window directly behind me facing the screen. It has blinds but the room is well lit during the day. I am not biased to plasma or LCD for this room but I am trying to not go much over $1K. I have found quite a few for that price but have generally only trusted Panasonic stuff so far. The brands I am finding are LG, Toshiba, Insignia, Vizio and Sharp. I know I won't be getting the most awesome TV from those brands but it's just a monitor really. I doubt it will get used for even an hour a day without me gaming or the kid's Nemo. I assume I'll need 1080P for the games and PC. I guess 120mhz refresh because of the games but nothing else really. I found a 47" LG with those specs for $999. I just don't know if I trust a LG. It is supposed to be $600 off.

The LG should be ok. I lost a Polaroid 26" that I used for the xbox this week(made in China). Took it to a repair place, the guy basically told me to buy Japanese because he barely gets them in for repair. He said Panasonic was one of the best so you are ok there but he said keep away from Vizio, Insignia, Westinghouse and other off brands since the majority of them are made in China, and at the store they even look more vibrant than the higher brands. They are aftermarket style tvs and the parts are hard to get and therefore hard to repair. The main thing is the parts, the Chinese tvs use like 35v capacitors the good tvs use around 250v capacitors, big difference there. Stick with Toshiba, Samsung, etc. The Korean tvs are good and the Japanese. There will always be a bad apple in the best brands but overall you know what the good brands are. He said for the $50-$100 more than the off brand just get the good ones. If you need more advice call a tv repair place and see what they constantly get, then you will know what to stay away from.
