So, Ive been taking it easy on the gaming front lately. Pretty much not playing anything at all. So, I decide to grab a somewhat older game that Ive heard lots of good about, Mass Effect. Here's the current computer:
Intel E6600
8gb DDR2 1066
Asus 750i motherboard (brain fart, cant remember the name)
Creative Labs X-Fi Fatal1ty Champion
(2) MSI GTX260 896mb
Vista Business 64bit
Thermaltake Kandalf
Corsair 1000w PS
(2) WD Raptors 300gb
(2) SATA DVD-RW
So, I load up the game, start watching the cinematic...and POOF, the computer completely shuts off after about 2 minutes. Hmm, so, I turn it back on, clear my systray, clear task manager, and start it up again. Poof, computer shuts off again...around 2 minutes in. Well, needless to say, im a tad perturbed. Any thoughts? My first thought is power supply...shouldnt be an issue as its probably the best on the market, IMO. Well, I talked to one of my customers and hes going to trade me an HD4890 VaporX 2gb for my 2 GTX260...Im thinking maybe its the SLI or possibly even a power issue, so going to 1 card might fix it. Maybe? Hmmm..open to suggestions from the techies. Thanks in advance.

An SLI/Xfire issue would not cause your computer to restart. Have you tried to reinstall the game? Though that would usually end with an error and not a restart. Why not pull one of the cards out and test it again?
I am also pretty sure your PSU is fine as you stated. Corsair PSU's are rock solid and my last 750tx and current 850hx have been running strong.
1kw psu isnt enough for that setup if you are ocing. You have alot going on in there. So you have a power failure or it just resets? This is easy to find out. Pull one card and see if it solves your problem. IDK much about corsair psu's but in my time using SLI I have learned that many dont handle power needs the right way. Too many rails and not enough power per rail or on the right rail. Also what temp is that 1kw at 1kw? If its at a cold temp then tha psu doesn even truly offer 1kw. Tagan and power pc and cooing were better than corsair when I did my build.
I had a similar problem but with an AMD and would restart after 10-20 mins of playing. So, I lowered the cpu voltage by 1 to 2 ticks. Ex: from 1.35 V to 1.25 V (yours mostly likely will be different). For whatever reason, that solved the problem with no noticeable loss in performance, if any.

From all major review sites, the Corsair is one of the best power supplies, period. Build quality is 2nd to none. Per Anandtech, the stability is the best they had tested (up until the test, of course. See here: http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...spx?i=3296&p=1 ). The PS was the first 1000w to receive NVidia's triple SLI cert.
It should be more than enough. Not to mention, it was handling games fine a month ago. I guess I should remove one of the cards and see if that fixes it.

I wouldn't fiddle with cpu voltages unless you are competent and comfortable with overclocking info.
if you're going to trade your cards for a single card anyways, why not report back if there is still an issue after that? SLI is a headache. some games just don't play nicely with SLI tech.
a quick google search on 'mass effect crashing SLI' brings up plenty of complaints. I would start there.

Yea, that was my thinking. My wife completely forbids me from opening my case any more. I guess I get a little cranky when ish doesnt work right. I'll go ninja and remove one card when she isnt looking.

recently proposed to my woman of 4.5 years actually, she's understanding, she knows when to just leave me be until I am finished lol.
I just hate working on PC's during my free time. I do it all day at work, I don't like to fiddle with my personal ****, especially when I am aching to do something fun / relax / play a game.

Congrats. The wife knows to leave me alone, but shed much rather I just let a customer take care of it. I sell the parts all day, so Id rather not have to fiddle with my home computer either.

The PSU can easily handle your set up. I have a Corsair 850HX powering a Q9550, 2 Velociraptors and 2 other hdds , 2 dvd roms, a 4870x2 and 4890, as well as two D5 pumps for watercooling. I am 100% sure a 1000hx will power your system.
I would have to say that it is something else that is causing this issue. Have you tried to run a mem test on your ram possibly? Another easy way to rule out your video cards would be to run a benchmarking test and see if that causes your computer to restart. Programs such as Vantage should easily push your video cards to the limit or you can download ati tools which would show issues as well.
As far as rails go, the Corsair 1000hx I believe has two rails where as the Corsair 850hx is one. Regardless tho, your PSU is far enough to handle your computer.
any updates? you never said if it shuts down completely (power off) or just resets
It completely shuts down. Ill yank the 2nd card tonight. I wont have the new one for probably 10 days or so. I guess I should open it up and make sure all the cables are seated (just moved recently, so maybe a 6pin came loose?). My nights have been filled with hanging pictures, putting together furniture and other "move-in" type crap.

Gatti, a 1kw PS is more than enough for what he is doing, I'm running a solid 750W PS with a GTX295, E8400 OC'd to 4ghz, 2 hard drives, sound card, quite a few fans.
GTX260 = @185W max load
GTX295 = @350 max load
ATI 4870X2 = @375W max load
I've run the ATI 4870X2 on the 750W power supply as well, all with *zero* issues.
Ok I just assumed more power than my 8800gtx's. Still it has to be a short or psu issue since he is losing power. Admittedly I don't follow new tech when I'm not buying.

Or a heat issue..I didnt have a chance to pull the card last night. Just moved into the house and the wife's best friend is having her reception at our house...on Sunday. WTF??
