I have this SQL file server at work, and I want to back up the files to an online location off-site. Any recommended services for this?
Also what software does every one use? I have been looking at the Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 but not sure if I need all that.
I already have an external HDD to back up on every night, but that failed once along with the computer HD, costing a pretty penny to recover every thing.
Dump the databases via the nightly maintenance plan and use SynchToy from MS to synch them nightly offsite, your maintenance plan should keep you up to 5 days of backups online.

Can I backup files using synctoy if they are still in use?
Also do you recommend any offsite services I can use to backup?
