Default Shopping for a Laptop

What or where is the most cost affective place to get a laptop?

can you build them like you can a desktop? or is it best to go to the manufacturer like dell or sony?

and what is the difference in the following?

SATA Hard Disk Drive (7200rpm) VS SATA Solid State Drive

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8800 (2.66GHz)
vs
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P9700 (2.80GHz)
vs
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9900 (3.06GHz)

Genuine Microsoft® Windows® 7 Professional 64bit
vs
Genuine Microsoft® Windows® 7 Ultimate 64bit

thanks.

well first what will you be using the laptop for? and second how much are you willing to spend on a laptop?

the difference between a hard disk and solid state is that the solid state is like a memory card. The regular hard disk is, well, a hard disk. When the HDD turns on the disk spins to read whatever it needs. With the SSD there is no disk. Think of it as a memory card for you phone or camera. There are no moving parts so its very very quiet, and its a lot faster than the regular HDD. The downside is that SDD are very very expensive.

As for the processors, the more hertz the faster the processor speed.

heres a link for the Windows 7 comparison: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...e/default.aspx

One thing to keep in mind when choosing the 64 bit Windows is that a lot of things may not work with that particular bit.

I would suggest getting an i7 processor rather than the Core2Duo. It will cost more but it's well worth it in the long run.

what do you mean by that?

i will be using the laptop for work primarily. must be able to handle multiple office apps (word, excel, and publisher) and adobe apps (photoshop, illustrator, and fireworks), managing my website, emails, and various web based apps all running at the same time, while streaming music and news all at the same time. and i need lots of storage space. it needs to be able to run Office 2007 Ultimate and Adobe Master Collection CS4.

oh and i want computer savvy people to say "Damn that is a sick *** laptop."

Buying anything other than 64 bit at this point is a waste of time.

In that case you can go with either one. Some hardware can only work with 32bit OS and not 64bit. The only real benefit of the 64bit is that it can handle more RAM. The 32bit can only utilize up to 3.25-3.5gb of RAM and the 64 can handle 4gb+

i see i see. thanks guys.

also...

i currently have a Sony Viao VGN-S580p that has been the best damn computer EVER!!! i have had it now for 4 years and recently just upgraded the harddrive and added more ram. it starts fast, there was no junk from Sony like the Dell computers have, i have literally had ZERO issues with it and it just looks cool. the only problem is it slows down when running tons of programs at once and it is just getting old and beat up.
my Dell desktop on the other hand has been the biggest piece of **** ever. most of the Dell apps get stuck, it starts painfully slow, i have had to reformat the hd many times.

so as you can see i am very partial to Sony and with that i know there is a large price tag which i am willing to pay for the quality.
now with that said is there something out there that is better or comparable for a better price?

IMO Sony is overpriced and you can get the same stuff in an HP for a lot less, but if you prefer Sony over HP and dont mind paying the high price than go with Sony.

Yes they do, but nothing a wipe and reinstall upon receiving won't fix ( I do that with all the boxed machines we buy)

My opinion, but a $500 laptop and then replace it in about a year and a half, laptops are just commodity hardware, paying a premium for when the technology is a waste of time/money/energy IMHO.

good point but my 4 year old Sony is better than that it gets slow when i have word, excel, publisher, illustrator, photoshop, streaming music, streaming news, and multiple websites open and all running at the same time.
so i dont really see how getting that would be a benefit. if i am missing something please enlighten me.
