Default Canon EOS Rebel XSi Black 12.2 MP 3X Zoom Digital Camera

Any informed opinions? Read some reviews and the camera seems to be a good first transition from point and shoot and Dell has it on sale for fifty bucks less than Wal*Mart.

Thanks.

Thanks.
The rebel series are great cameras. The only limitations for me is when using them for sports photography. They claim 3.5 fps but in reality it shoots about 2 shots per second, then it gets overloaded & pauses for about 2 seconds, then shots a burst of 2 shots again etc.

I shoot surfing & need to be able to shot burst at about 4 fps+ continiously. I ended up buying a Canon 40D for $999 (at Walmart on line) & it did the trick. I ended up taking it back right away because they came out with a Canon 7D the next week which shots 8 fps & also shots HD video among other things.

The bottom line is the Rebel is a great entry level camera & besides the issues I stated above, will make you very happy.

Thanks. The per second isn't an issue for me. I just thought it seemed like a heck of a camera for $650 and that lens is included. I've been seeing body only cameras with these features at that price.

I bought mine at costco and it came with 2 lenses and a Canon bag...I just got into photography and I love this camera, I am still learning how to use it but it was definitely an upgrade from the "pocket cameras" I used to buy.

Sorry not the same price as walmart, I paid $849.00 at costco..it came with the 18-55mm & 55-250mm w/image stabilizer, 2g card, canon camera strap, installation software & instruction disc, charger and gig bag. Right now costco has the bundle minus the Canon bag for $799.00 Hope this helps.

Sure it's not your memory cards? Sounds like slow memory cards to me.

something is wrong with your xsi. i am able to shoot 3 or 4 shots per second using multiple burst.

camera body is as important as the lens. i recommend just buying the body.Put your money into good lens. I recommend new Tamron 17-50 with VC which offers the best bang for the buck.

by the way, Bing is offering 20% cashback from Dell.com.
Go to Bing.com search for dell, you'd get 20% off. I think it ends this weekend.

xsi with kit lens = 471 bucks

xsi body only = 424 bucks.

My guess is he's using the memory that's linked in this thread.

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Memory.../dp/B0009RGLSE

I'm guessing that card writes at or less then 8mb/sec

the sandisk II cards have 16mb/sec speeds and the IIIs have 32MB/sec speed.

Guess what happens when you use slow memory that writes at less then 8mb/sec and shoot off 3 pictures in one second at 12mb a picture?

oh I know. you blame the camera!

I have 6 SDII 2gb cards for basic shooting 2 SDIII cards for sport shooting and 1 SDII 16GB card for my stays in camera card that gets used for all the basics.

Ok guys, I have used my friends XSi, currently own a T1i, have owned a 40D & also own currently a 7D, all were used for surfing photography/same application. The fact is rebels do not shoot repeated shots, it shoots bursts which means it shoots a couple shots then pauses then begins shooting again. The 40D & 7D do shoot continuous shots for a longer duration & that duration is long enough for me. An example is one day I went & shot the ASP pros surfing in a contest & shot over 1300 shots in one day thus on the shutter a lot. I buy the top end cards for each camera I own, class 6, Extreme III & IV's etc. Like I said, love the Rebels but they are a consumer level camera & one of their weaknesses is sports shooting (which does not matter to the op). There is a reason why I own a 7D (just like there is a reason we own a 350Z vs a Sentra).

Even with the 40D which is suppose to shot 6.5 fps, you will find it does not. The reason is marketing. Canon, like all camera companies know people tend to buy off of specifications so the better the number, the better it sells. When they list 6.5 fps, that is at its lowest mega-pixel rating & no one is going to shoot pictures at a low quality setting like that. Instead most tend to shoot at the highest setting for a higher quality picture & when they do, because there is much more data thus slower to transfer it. I think it is more reasonable to take the number they spec out & cut it in half assuming you are using the highest quality card in the camera. So, the 40D really shoots about 2.5-3fps instead of the 6.5 fps canon claims. The rebel, more like about 1-1.5 fps. I know because when I shoot sports photography, it really matters & when it lags, it really effects the shots I get with the camera. Again, my 7D is spec'ed to shoot 8fps thus when it really is shooting 4fps, it helps with fast moving action.

shooting in raw I can get off 6 shots before my memory runs into issues

when in a low quality mode the memory card never runs into any issues and allows the camera to shoot nonstop until the battery dies or the card fills up

So I wasted an extra $200 bucks for vid ability?

Jeffie the Xsi has a DIGIC 3 and the T1i has a DIGIC 4 processor....is there a measurable difference?

no idea lol, but the way I feel about things is you're buying an SLR to shoot pictures, not video, so why bother? just use your cell phone or buy one of the many mini HD cams on the market. they range in the 100-200 range.
