I have a Dell XPS Laptop. Needless to say it has now crapped out on me, below are the pix of what it's doing.
I thought it was a battery/power problem so I swapped out a new battery but that didn't change. Then I thought it was a memory problem so I took out 1GB DIMM out of the 2GB sticks I have, and swapped (not replaced with new) those in and out but I am still getting the same problem. I have formatted, but still no go.
So is it the LCD or Video Card? Should I get new RAM sticks? I am getting frustrated...
That would be your video card. Have you tried plugging any external monitor? If you get the same screen then it's the video card for sure. If you don't get anything then it might be the LCD.
What model is your XPS? Have you contacted Dell support?
As latin racer said, it's the video card. There's a known problem with the embedded nvidia chips. My XPS went through the same exact problem- strange characters, etc. Have a couple of other of the same models in the office, same thing.
Dell will need to change out the entire motherboard.

Once they do that, you'll be golden. No problems.
I read a while back the at some point dell extended your warranty or got your a laptop replacement due to the nvidia chip problems. You will have do a research on your model and give dell a call.

I hope this doesn't happen to my xps 1340...uuhh that would suck.

lol it's not that easy.....just get a new mobo or a new laptop.
For that one, it is. Couple of screws, some new thermal grease.
Anyway, as others have said, it would be better to take that hundred bucks and put it toward a new laptop, imo, unless you can find the part for cheap.
Dell have some good products. In this case nvida ****ed up on the video cards. How is this dells fault? He got four years out of his laptop. I think that's more then enought and time for a new upgrade. Each companies have the + or -.
