2007+ G35/G37 VLSD (3.692) swap into base 2008 350Z (3.538)
The car we worked on was a 2008 350Z base with and open non-locking rear differential. The goal was to swap in a LSD at a cost conscious price. After doing some research we decided to try on of the newer G35 differentials with VLSD and a gear ratio of 3.692. This gained our solution of a cost effective LSD and as a bonus had a bit better gearing 3.692 versus the 3.538 that came stock.
Our donor differential came from a 2008 Infiniti G35 6MT. You can see a comparison of the two differentials below. As you can see from the picture they have the same case as well as all the same flanges. The only items that needed to be swapped over from the old differential was the ABS sensors as the donor differentials had individual plugs and the old had one merged plug.
After the sensors were swapped over we put in some fresh fluid into the donor differential and bolted it in. We drove it around for a little while just to let the fluid spread inside the diff and let the diff have a little movement. After that the owner let it rip and his impressions are that it is like a completely different car.
We believe this was a worthwhile and cost effective modification using OEM parts.
The donor diff came from a 2008 G35 6MT and interchanges with the vehicles below:
INFINITI G37 2009 Cpe and Sdn, Rr, RWD, locking, MT (3.692 ratio)
INFINITI G37 2008 (RWD, 3.692 ratio), locking, MT
INFINITI G35 2008 (4 Dr, Sdn), Rr, RWD, locking, MT
INFINITI G35 2007 Rr, RWD, 4 Dr (Sdn, 3.692 ratio), locking, MT
EDIT:
370Z MT would work.

The differential from the Auto version can also be used but you will need to move the driveshaft flange from your old differential as the Auto versions use a 3 bolt flange.

this kicks ***. i never considered too much the possibility of swapping the entire diff, vs just swapping gears/internals. you may have just convinced me to go and find an already assembled diff and throwing it on my ride.
thanks for the post.

I"m wondering the same thing, Havok. If you have, say, an Auto '06 350z touring, would you still want the MT G35/G37 VLSD pumpkin? Or would you want the auto G35/G37 pumpkin?

I just did the same swap too my 2005 Base, I got the diff for $300 out of an 09 G37s. Swap took about 2hrs, and from lets say a 40 roll 2nd gear my rpms sit 500 above wat they used to.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I am trying to swap a G37 pumpkin into my 2003 6mt. The flange that came with it is from a 350z I believe, and does not seat right. I installed it before I caught that and it leaked all over the place. I'm thinking a g37 flange might be the solution, but can't get my hands on one for a visual inspection. I ground down the dust sheild and pressed it back so it would clear the lip of the g37 diff (there is a slight difference in the moulding of the pumpkin), but when we torqued it down, it seemed to bind against the bearings. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've searched, and searched, but not 100% sure which way to go.

sorry for bumping old thread... i am going to exchange my base 350z diff with my friend sport package 370z diff..
about the sensors. should i swap the sensors? and how? cut the wires?
will really appreciate someone help.. i need to do it right coz my friend will sell his 370z with my 350z diff, and he dont want any ABS warning light..
another Q, how will i know that his diff is VLSD.. after long reading i found that if i left his car and turned one rear wheel, the other should turn in the same direction,, is that right?

if the pumpkin is out of the car, just turn one of the stub axles (NOT THE DRIVESHAFT FLANGE!), when you turn one of the stub axles, the other should go the same direction.
i have heard that the 370z pumpkins will drop right in to the 350z.. but i also saw posts that say they will not. i do not know for sure. if you look at pics of a 370z diff online, it looks like the sensors will fit fine without any need to swap them over.
good luck!

done!! we swapped the diffs today and it worked.
took 6MT 370z sport package vlsd and kept it in my Base 2007 6MT
and i kept my none LSD pumpkin in his car.
all u have to do is to swap the sensors.
thats it..
