Default Short shifter install results

So I installed a spec d short shifter today and seem to have a problem. I went through the instructions carefully which turn out to be hard that what it seemed like. Well after the install turns out my gears wont go in as good and cant seem to find reverse. Can it be a possibility that my clutch is going out? keep in mind car has 103,xxx miles on it. In order to get in first I have to kinda force it in. All the other gears don't tend be as difficult. I did notice that the big rubber boot right above the shift linkage was kinda thick so i used a rubber mallet to set in place. Any helpor info on short shifters would be appreciated. thanks guys.
here's a pic of my car just for the heck of it

Not sure about the spec D but it was common knowledge back in the days that some short shifters on the market were not made with precision. Most of the time there was little to no engineering r&d with the cheap brands, just copy and paste from a reputable company.
