Okada Plasma Ignition Coils? Anyone?
I'm misfiring right now, and having trouble isolating the problem. 6x new spark plugs, and 4 new Duralast (autozone) ignition coils. I posted a thread in maintenance documenting what I did, but anyone seen these Okada ignition coils?
The Audi guys dyno'd them and saw 15whp gains here:

Curious if it would be worth it on an NA Z, since I'm having problems already with ignition coils.
Solved my misfires, I'm retarded... 4 & 6 ignition coil connectors reversed...

the stock Z coils have shown good to 700+ hp easily there is absolutely no use going to those. the stock Z coils are 31k volts, the okada are 38k volts. if you are absolutely dead set on getting new coils(even though stock are perfectly fine and you have some sort of electrical problem that the bandaid fix isnt going to fix) then wire in ls2 truck coils which come in at 42k volts and will work perfectly fine, they are also a three wire coil and you can get 8 with the mounting brackets and connectors for about 120-160 bucks. combine that with msd super conductor plug wires for $80. theres really no reason to waste 1k on coils.
oh yah and the ls2 truck coils will also handle a 5.5 ms dwell time no problem, vs iirc hal recommended 4.4-4.5 max on the stock z coils which allows all kinds of nifty things to be done with plug gaps like opening them up for better combustion, been thinking about it myself but kinda on the fence atm. the power they put out is why all the other platforms turn to those coils as a upgrade to smart coils, hard to beat.
oh yah and the ls2 truck coils will also handle a 5.5 ms dwell time no problem, vs iirc hal recommended 4.4-4.5 max on the stock z coils which allows all kinds of nifty things to be done with plug gaps like opening them up for better combustion, been thinking about it myself but kinda on the fence atm. the power they put out is why all the other platforms turn to those coils as a upgrade to smart coils, hard to beat.

Anyone have experience with these other two, much less expensive ignition coils? And as for the yellow jacket one, I would be able to just take the bottom half of my ignition coils and swap it onto this one, since it appears to not come with it, right?

splitfire ones seem to just have better shielding then stock and higher voltage vs the multispark discharge of the okadas hence the cheaper price. wouldnt change my answer on previous post though.

Edit: I read a little bit about aftermarket ignition coils, but found most of the info to be way over my head for a quick read. My questions about this are:
1. Can you use the stock rubber boot and spring components? Or do you have to mix and match parts to get the right length down to the spark plug?
2. How do modify the OEM wiring connector to fit this LS2 truck plug?
3. How do you mount the LS2 ignition coil to the valve covers so it stays in place snug?

sent yah a reply but that guy got it pretty good, it really is pretty easy, the hardest part will be making a mounting bracket, twisted wires like that are recommended but not needed, it helps cut electrical noise from magnetic fields but ive not seen a ton of evidence that it does much. heck people dont even notice increased interference from unshielded solid copper plug wires, and they have way more juice going through them. its simply a matter of matching the ls2 wires to the nissan wires since both have the same 3 wires, 12v, ground and 5v signal they just might not be the same terminals so gotta check wiring diagram.
my bad looks like the ls2 coils have 2 grounds on them one for the signal and one for the coil itself, not a big deal though since the megasquirt manual that guy linked has the wiring diagram for them.

Does seem simple, and I imagine making a clean mounting bracket would be the hardest part of the install. I might just pioneer this since it's cheaper than OEM, and just as good as a $1,000+ aftermarket coil on plug setup. I have plenty of time right now. I don't have any real electrical knowledge though, but I can crimp a wire, and figure out basic arts/crafts/mechanical stuff.

Is there a diagram of the connector for the Z? Looks like there's a yellow/red, black, and white (maybe grey?) wire going into our ignition coils. Given the above wiring diagram for the LS2 coil, which wire would go to where on that coil?

based on that the black will be ground, i would run it to pin B on the ls coil although you could run it to both A and B but i suggest a separate ground on pin A. then the white/grey wire you would run to pin D on the ls coil(its the 12v) these two wires will be the same across all 6 coils. then the remaining wire is for pin C and is the 5V signal.
your gona go and make me end up doing it too lol. you will be able to take better advantage of it with a retune but it will definitely run on a stock tune.
if you do actually do it though just be careful to wire it exactly the same so you dont blow the coils giving 12v to a 5v pin or powering a ground.

I'm wondering now, if I really even need a bracket. I could just ghetto-zip tie the ignition coils to the wiring harness to test it; that thing is pretty secure what-with-all the bolts keeping it in place.
How hard would it be to actually rewire the Z's 3 ignition coil wires into that LS2 ignition coil, and what would happen if I connected the ground to both A and B (out of partial laziness...lol). I suppose running a ground from each ignition coil connector wouldn't be to hard to the timing cover though.

muwahahahahah, im gona be slightly pissed at myself if i do go that route after i just bought pins for the vq coils........... just waiting on my cam/crank sensor pins to show up from distributor and same for my sumitomo pins for the vvt and knock sensor.
im trying to save money for leaving island and shipping my car but i was thinking a custom low profile valve cover with built in bungs and mounting for the ls2 coils would be pimp. only thing i would be unsure of is sealing but i think a dual flange with o ring would work great then could trim tube down some too. would go great with vr38 style intake(tubes actually go to head vs common lower like the vq uses) an dual TB since the infinity supports that.
