Default Nismo GT Pro 1.5 Way - Question...

Hey all

I bought new and ordered from Japan, a Nismo GT Pro 1.5 way.
I just installed it into the R200 and shimmed it.
Backlash and wear marks are perfect!

My question is... has anyone else used this diff and used the CLSD Friction Additive with it?

My experiences with CLSDs in the past is that you always use a Friction Additive for use with all clutch type LSDs.

Thanks in advanced.

Yes, add friction modifier if the fluid you are using doesn't already have it...I believe NISMO (Motul) COMPETITION OIL 2189E 75W-140 already contains the additive.

Correct and after the first drain, refill it with your fluid of choice and add some friction modifier in the middle of the fill. My Nismo GT LSD has been in the racecar for going on eight years without any problems by doing this annually.

Fantastic! Thanks guys.

David, I should have known to ask you.
So how do you like this differential?

This is obviously going into my built 300zx z31. I have to do a lot of fab to get this diff to go in.

As far as mechanical LSD diffs go in racing, the NISMO unit has been first-rate. Tough and durable, it puts the power down well enough. It's only weakness is it locks a bit too abruptly in wet conditions, so you've got to feather the throttle.

In a street car its great except in parking lots. You get looked at funny and passangers ask whats wrong with your car. You will feel the difference on your first high speed turn and love the decision you made.

So question on oil...
The manual states that I need to break in the diff for 180 miles then drain the oil.

I went to Nissan today to buy more Nismo oil and they said they carry the Castrol SAF-XJ oil for the GTR. I asked them if it has the friction additive needed for the GT Pro.
They said it did.

So I bought 2 quarts of it.
I come home and try to read up on it. No where did I find that it has the friction additive.

What should I do? Keep the oil? Or return it and order the Nismo Motul Competition stuff?

While the Castrol will probably be fine, I'd go for the Motul comp lube:

Add one 4 oz. container of Redline LSD modifier and you're done.

I will just use the Castrol and add the Redline modifier to it.

Here are a few pics of the installation into my z31... all of which is custom.
BTW - I am using the beefier z32tt/q45 axles which are 30 spline. 350z are 29 spline.

Very nice! How much fluid did you end up using?

So the kit initially came with 2 liters of Nismo Oil, which just a little under 2 qts.
The diff became full at almost the 2 liters.

I bought 2 qts of the Castrol stuff.

I have only done about 40-50 miles of break-in... got a few more to go, haha.

I just wanted to give an update on this new setup for my z31.

It is amazing!
The diff hooks up very nicely and it handles the road with such grip!

But man, this diff is loud and clunky!
I have still yet to drain the fluid out to put in the new stuff with Redline. I will probably do that within the next few weeks. I don't daily this car.

When you drain and refill, put in one bottle of Redline friction modifier, than refill. You may want to add another half bottle to keep the chatter down after that.

I changed the oil in the diff today with that Castrol and added the Redline additive.
Wow! The diff got significantly quieter with a lot less chatter!
I definitely recommend the oil and additive that I used!
Night and day difference!

Glad to hear the suggestions worked. Did you use a single bottle of Redline friction modifier, or did you need more?

Yeah, I used just the whole 4oz bottle.

How much do you regularly use during a change?

Once the diff has been properly broken in, all I use is one 4 oz. bottle at each swap.
