Safe to Redline?
Just bought a 2008 350Z Grand Touring Coupe with a 6 speed manual a few weeks ago. I generally drive like an old lady but I do enjoy being pushed back in the seat but not all the time because I don't want to hurt the engine. It's all stock and I pretty much plan on keeping it that way but will keep it in tip top condition with regular maintenance.
I'm wondering how high I can wind out the gears...mainly first, second and third without stressing the engine or anything else. I know the tach redlines at 7500 but I haven't had it up that high yet. Can you get up to 7500 in first, second and third safely? Probably wouldn't run it that high though but maybe 7000. Will it hurt the engine to sometimes run it that high...you know...when you turn onto a long open road with no traffic and that little voice says come on...let's do it. Well...can I and not worry about the engine coming apart and spraying hot metal all over the place? I'm not talking about every long empty road everyday but once in awhile...sometimes...maybe just a little more than sometimes but no more than that. Thanks!

I've always assumed it is a "shift point" (when performing it); it was in my Porsche 911S (Porsche techs that had a race team told me that) and the HR handles 7,500 well IMO.

Travlee not sure what your trying to say...have no plans to do either...maybe I'm missing something? Anyway traffic's so bad where I live you can barely get out of second gear and maybe 55 on the interstate where you get boxed in and locked in at that speed or less.
Yea I see the hype about anything and everything and when you get down to it sometimes you find out the hype's a lie so that's why I'm asking. You hear and read things...it can do this and it can do that but the fine print says it's not recommended.
Sounds like I'll be ok running it that high...just wanted to be sure. Thanks for the replies!

My car goes into the red on just about every shift while on track. So far, no metal parts blown out the bottom. Been doing that for 9 years now, your results should be similar

I set my rev limiter at 5500 last weekend, on my 03. Today I bounced off 7000 in first. Rev limiter doesn't work. Car does so have fun.
And some people occasionally forget to get enough fibre...

You said you set the limiter, implying that you set your rev limiter in uprev or some other engine management system that would allow you that level of control...
Setting the light just gives you a super cool light at whatever you set super cool light to go blinky at.
