My 350z TT
Hi Guys,
Im new here and just wanted to introduce myself and also get some advise on my build.
I am from Sydney Australia and I have an late 03 350z with a custom twin turbo setup and a forged engine. Currently making about 440rwhp on 98 octane pump gas.
Since there are not many turbo Zs here and even more rare are ones with built motors and tuners really have no idea about my car I wanted to get some tips.
Setup just the basics
VQ35DE with CP pistons and H beam rods.
1000cc injectors
welbro 460 pump
2x garrett GT28 BB turbos
3 inch TBE
All powered by a haltech platium pro
It made 440rwhp with a exedy heavy duty clutch at 14psi. The clutch started slipping with more boost. surprisingly it has been 2 years and the clutch is still doing well. Only starting to slip here and there but hardly ever. I am looking to upgrade the clutch and retune to get more power.
- Can anyone recommend a good clutch (aiming for about 550rwhp). Ive been reading about the JWT clutches would that be ok?
- If i wanted to go E85 would I need a bigger pump and injectors?
- how much realistic HP can i get with my setup and keeping it safe?

Nice Z, here's to Counter clockwise donuts.
98 oct, nice. what's that cost? a gallon.
Had a built DE with 2# greddy 18g's and a hks fcon make 590/560 on 17psi on 93 octane.
But I did have cosworth heads. So can't really give you any #'s, because each engine is set up different.
Jwt is a good clutch, I had the combo(clutch/flywheel) when I had the TT kit installed(420hp). But when the de motor was built I went with a triple plate. @ 550 RWHP you'll have the JWT set up pretty much at it's limits. And if you don't do a lot of the work yourself a shop will hit you for atleast 700$ to remove your trans to re-place a worn clutch. I would go a couple hundred more horse power rating wise on the clutch over what you plain on having, just a good piece of mind.
I'm shooting for 900-1000hp and I have a 1200hp clutch. To give you an example.
Guy's have taken a walbro 450/485 and 80lbs injectors(800cc) to 15- 17psi right around 600-700hp on pump gas, and the pump and injectors were tapped out at those #'s. But that is with 6an-8an(or bigger like -10an ) lines with a fuel return system.
To be honest at those levels 550 hp I would just stay on a 98 octane tune. Around 650-700WHP is where e85 comes in handy. And where it shines under that, pump gas can easily do it.

As for clutch realisticly i dont think ill get to 550hp id be happy with 500rwhp at 18psi on 98 because the turbos are pretty small. So i think the JWT would be ok?

Yeah that by the litre's thing throws me, though it's the right way to do it.. When in other countries the money has colour and gas by the litre's, it all seems a bit odd..
At your power levels and being able to get 98 I would stick with that.
But it sounds like you live in a not so car friendly area I wouldn't do c16 or e85 both have a very distinct smell. don't want to stand out.. too much.
figure with 98* and 2# 350hp(700) turbo's @18lbs I would expect more then 550rwhp.
My old 18g's were/are only 400hp each But again I had the heads. So maybe the 500-550 is right where you'll be.
getting tuned on e85 at the moment, lol sorry. I will tell you once I get it on the road. My old 590/560 set up was no traction in 1-2 gear passed 3500rpm's and 3rd was about 5000-5500rpm's about 80mph when the rear would hook,squat,go. That was with DS axles and after market lsd. with 19' te37's w/PS2's in 275's.
I am doing boost by gear with a Holley HP. So I won't have 20-25psi of boost till 4th gear ramping it up. Makes it much easier to drive, otherwise probably would get to far without spinning out.
At your power levels and being able to get 98 I would stick with that.
But it sounds like you live in a not so car friendly area I wouldn't do c16 or e85 both have a very distinct smell. don't want to stand out.. too much.

How the heck do the Mighty Car Mods guys get away with their show in Australia?!
yeah unfortunately Australia doesnt like modded cars at all. In saying that alot of cars here run e85 (3 of my old evos all ran e85). Because you can run more boost and causing less strain on the engine. speaking to the tuner I should be able to get 500hp on 98 and 540+ on e85. But if i go E85 i will need to get a bigger fuel setup so still thinking. I think at this stage see what i can max out on 98 and then go for more once I get bored hahaha.
Yeah my car kicks out like crazy but lucky I have the traction control on my car and the LSD.
What engine are you using to make the 1000hp? your car is not a VQ35 anymore?

If you get defected 3 ways to get your car road legal
- put the car back to standard
- get a dodgy guy to pass it (getting very very hard these days and cost bog $).
- get an engineers certificate for all modifications... that will only happen if they comply with standards. Not easy to do and very expensive
So in my case if I get i really need to keep it looking N/A so i dont have to deal with all that haha

Sounds just like the state of California, USA to me...CARB...
Dont get me wrong everyone still mods there cars but if you get pulled over and u have a load exhaust or a massive turbo or even a pod filter or wheels are to wide/big, car to low etc you get a instant defect and fines. so its the risk you take.
If you get defected 3 ways to get your car road legal
- put the car back to standard
- get a dodgy guy to pass it (getting very very hard these days and cost bog $).
- get an engineers certificate for all modifications... that will only happen if they comply with standards. Not easy to do and very expensive

no more traction control, so I will be able to final really use my carbon 1.5 LSD.
Yeah e85 allows more timing and more boost/less detonation. Also a little more forgiving compared to gas when tuning(can pull more degrees of timing with e85. But it is gummy and dirtier then gas. Which if sat for any long amount of time(e85) can and will gum up lines,pumps,injectors.
Guy's in cold winter states(like me) have to before storage run a little bit of gas through the fuel system, so the e85 doesn't sit and get gummy.
I think you have enough injector and fuel pump to get you there on e85. It's the fuel lines size and fuel return that you need. Maybe a newer fuel pressure regulator with return.
Either way go have fun with it. I have owned my Z since 07 so that's why the changes, have fun with yours, set up the way it is. you can always change it down the road.

update
So I went with a twin plate clutch and got it re-tuned on e85..
made 520rwHP/385rwKW on 18psi maxing out the actuators, if i replace those I should be able to push more boost and aim for the 600HP mark
