My first gear on my 04 Z is a little rough to get into unless I'm dead stopped, and if I accelerate hard off the line in 1st, it doesn't quite pop out of gear but it feels like it will if i go over 5K rpm, and definitely when I go to shift to second it comes out really easily as soon as i depress the clutch.

Thinking about installing a short shifter. I don't love the stock shifter, but maybe its really the transmission I don't love. Will a short shifter help any of this? If so, which do you recommend? I believe the NISMO isn't available anymore and the AMS is recommended. Is this accurate?

have you done a flush a fill of the fluid, check to make sure the master and slave are operating properly.... the shifter is not the issue

I had the transmission fluid changed with OEM fluid at my last oil change. The issue seemed to go away for a day or two but then came back. I'll have my mechanic check the master and slave cylinders when I bring it in next.

If other gears seem fine, could it just be the previous owners wore on the first gear syncro? that might account for a tougher time getting it back in to first but idk if that accounts for it almost popping out at high rpm

for your car it is super easy to do... bribe a buddy with beer and flush it out.

i do the turkey baster method every oil change on my vette... prob overkill, but the fluid is cheap.

given that the car is semi new to you, you dont know the history of it (it may have never been done) i would do a flush and fill and then it is up to you as far as frequency going forward

A short shift kit won't make it easier to shift, in fact it will do the opposite. It will require more force, and more precision, because the top half of the lever is shorter. Having said that, I have the Nismo in my car, and have been very happy with it for the last 7 or 8 years.
