Propane as a power adder??
Some time ago I was watching horsepower t.v. and they hooked up a "propane system" to the gas line on a truck and added some serious power. Can somebody explain this to me, or was I dreaming? Anyhow, any assistance is appreciated...no flames please...I'm sure I will hear.."well, you could put a propane system on the Z for tailgate parties, that way you could make some killer burgers!"
Thanks!
Thanks!

There was a Supra Turbo at the TX2K2 meet w/ propane injection so it's just not limited to diesels. I don't know the particulars on how more power comes from using it, but from what I understand, it increases octane of all things. *shrug*

hehehe...I can jsut see it....:
YOu speayin..
Yea...
let me see your setup...
sure...(opens hatch)
Where is your bottle?
Right there (points to propane tank)
I don't see it, all i see is that propane tank...
That is it..
WTF.. You are sprayin Propane...
If this actually ads a good bit of power it will be the next buzz in rice..(not sayin that if you spray that u are a ricer jsut we will see stickers allover cars advertizing propane and all the ricers will be claimin that they have it..."man NOS ain't ****...Propane is da bomb..")
oh well

Funny this thread came up. A buddy of mine just pulled all the propane hardware off of his gas powered F350. The engine ran real clean. Oil never got dirty. If anybody wants it PM me and I will see if he is going to sell it.

Hey if it works and doesn't blow up your car go for it. By the way, can you can a grill accessory for the car? Maybe I can get a bolt on Charbroil grill for the back when I go to tailgate parties for the browns games.

Propane injection works similar to alcohol/water injection and also higher octane race gas. Reduces intake charge temperature and helps prevent detonation and pinging. I had an alcohol injection kit on my Supra TT which basically did the same thing for me as running race gas, and allowing me to run 3psi more boost (up to 20) without the computer pullling out timing due to knock.
So, on a 350Z it would only be applicable when going forced induction or possibly when running more nitrous than the fuel system can handle with 91 octane.

Propane injection in gasoline engines is usually for turbo applications. It cools the intake charge to allow more boost to be run without knock. It also raises the octane level. Basically, it is like water/alcohol inection, but could be considered better due to its combustible properties (plus the fact that it leaves the nozzle at like -60 degrees Farenheit or something like that). Propane injection has been used in the Buick Grand National circles for a while now, and is finding its way into the DSM's and Supra's.

I do wonder how much NOS paid for their name to be shouted in every other line.

I doubt propane will come back on gasoline engine
yes, it cools intake, yes, it's clean. But it only helps to improve performance a little. The output of engine still decided by how much air can be fed. (yes, I know cooler air is denser, but not much there)
NOS (I am sorry, nitrous oxi-die.... I give up) is part fuel and part air. It not only adds fuel, it also feeds more air(in a way). The only problem is the engine may run too lean, it needs more gasoline.
With propane added, you can only run too rich.....lol No propane will not come back on gasoline engine, not if nitro...oxide is around.

Again, propane is effective on TURBO engines. Because of the massive amounts of air being crammed into the engine, the effects of a cooler intake charge can be drastic. Even the difference in the outside temperature greatly affects the performance of a turbo car due to the denser air (ask anyone who owns one). Propane cools the intake charge and richens the fuel mixture, allowing more boost to be run (more air crammed into the engine) without knock. On a turbo car, the amount of air you are flowing is not limited like in a naturally aspirated engine. There are currently threads going about Propane Injection on several DSM sites (like www.dsmtalk.com), Gran National sites, and Supra sites.
PS - Nitrous Oxide does not add fuel. It is an oxidizer; it adds air. You have to add the fuel, or burn a piston from running too lean. The idea of nitrous or forced induction is adding more air, so you can add more fuel, to have greater combustion.

There are some Vipers that run a combo of Nitrous/propane. This combo allows them to not use an AFC or extra/larger injectors. I think they can run as low as high 10's with this setup and tuned properly.
With turbo applications, people can increase the pressure several psi without getting detonation. 3psi in a turbo car is a large gain in hp.
