Sony and Immersion Play Nice
Lawsuit ended, rumble coming, fans happy.
by Micah Seff
March 1, 2007 - Who would have thought that this day would come? Sony Computer Entertainment and Immersion announced today that both companies have agreed to put an end to their ongoing legal dispute and enter into a business agreement to incorporate Immersion's patented force feedback technology into future "PlayStation format products." Whether this means that the technology will be incorporated in future versions of the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller is still unclear, although what other "PlayStation format products" could they be talking about?
"We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us," said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. "Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."
As part of the agreement reached between the two companies, Immersion will be granted the full amount dictated by the District Court -- this includes damages, pre-judgment interest, and legal fees. The agreement also provides Sony with expanded rights with respect to Immersion's patents. No additional financial details were revealed, but it is expected that the termination of the litigation will have no material impact on Sony's consolidated earnings forecast announced on January 30, 2007.
"We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," said Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai, of Sony Computer Entertainment. "We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."
Do you have a PS3? This is good news for people who actually own a PS3 or plan on getting one.
Yes I got a PS3 with 2 controller. None of them have the rumble feature. Sony released some BS statement about not having it for the PS3 as "THis is not the direction we want to go with the new system..." How is this good for me? Now if I want the rumble I have to shell out $$$ to get new controllers again. Is Sony going to swap them out? For all the new owners that haven't purchased a PS3 this is awesome news because they might start including the new controller in the new PS3s. For people like me we lost out.

Noone said you had to go buy new controllers, but I will. Same thing with the 360 and the alledged new version with the 120gb HDD. All the previous owners with the 20gb like me will not benefit, but thats what happens in this game.

I know. I'm not saying I have to get new controller. All I'm saying is if I want the rumble this is not good news for me. That's all.

Yeah one is good. That way I'll feel more important than the other people without it
Shows you how Sony always spins everything, when they first got sued they said they didn't need rumble packs in the controllers for the PS3, now that they settle they decided the PS3 needed rumble packs after all lol
OT, I read in a magazine Sony is studying a proposed price cut on the PS3, even tho there CEO said they are losing $800 per PS3 unit sold... They must be feeling the heat from the Wii and 360... Even tho there PS2 is still out selling both there competitors, but I would imagine PS2 sales will start to slow down sooner or later... There future is definitely the PS3, now Sony just has to convince everyone else
First they were saying that the rumble conflicts with the motion sensing in the sixaxis, but now they are thinking about adding it. Maybe theyll swap ps2 backwards compaibility for a rumble feature.
