Japanese dolphin all smiles after prosthetic tail

TOKYO, March 2 (Reuters Life!) - A Japanese dolphin is squealing with delight after receiving a prosthetic tail to replace one amputated due to a skin disease.

Fuji's handlers at the Churaumi Aquarium in Japan's southern most island of Okinawa say the fake tail may have saved her life as she had put on dangerous amounts of weight from being inactive after she lost her tail.

"Because she was not exercising enough (after her tail was amputated) she gained weight and from blood samples we took we realised that her cholesterol levels were too high. We then were afraid that this might trigger other diseases so we had to come up with something," handler Masaya Koami said.

The tail was custom made for Fuji by a friend of the handler who works at Japan's leading tyre company Bridgestone.

The rubber prosthetic device is slightly smaller than the tail of a dolphin of Fuji's size. It is made of material used for Formula One race car tyres and the black silicon rubber was reinforced with artificial bone made of carbon-fibre.

Sponge rubber was used for parts that come directly in contact with Fuji's skin.

Bridgestone said they spent at least 10 million yen (about 43,000 pounds) to develop and produce the fin.

As for Fuji, the freedom that it brought her is priceless. After initially being frightened of it, the dolphin now leaps and swims with vigour.

Dolphin "squeeling with delight". Sounds like the orca freaks around here telling us how happy, sad, lonely, confused, or broken-hearted the wild killer whales are from their observations. It is only a matter of time until an idiot gets in the water with a black wetsuit to "swim with them in the wild" and mistakes a transient pod(mammal eating) for the local pods(fish eating).

43,000 pounds wouldn't do much for research on humans, especially considering the countless millions already being spent.

What about human children that needed artificial limbs instead of trying to create some anime freak riced out dolphin? I would single handedly kill every dolphin in the ocean to make just one kid able to walk again.

Good for you, but it's not like it was tax payer money that was spent on this. Maybe people shouldn't spend money on cars, hell, Ferrari should be forced to spend all their profits on taking care of poor children.

EDIT: Start donating money to children's hospitals if you feel so strongly about it, and if you already do I applaud your efforts.

Who said anything about donating all profits, but if you are going to donate get your damn priorities straight. Dolphin or human? If you have to think about which one to help you're a moron.

St Judes every month is where I put my money, not PETA or some other idiotic animal charity.

Hey, you like a mad tight JDM riced out dolphin, good for you. I would still blow up every one individually to help one kid walk again.

Yeah, I guess I am talking crazy talk when my priorities would run towards humans instead of animals. Now I am going to eat a steak. Have fun eating your Tofu Surprise!

God, your impossible not to argue with...

I wasn't trying to argue the fact that a dolphin is more important than a kid, I was arguing the point that a private company can use their money on anything they want. Although, on second thought you were only stating your opinion and I doubt you believe private companies "shouldn't" be allowed to spend their money any way they want, just that this company spent it poorly. Anyway, I apologize. (Does that make me the bigger man or anything...? )

I ate steak tonight too btw. I'd prove it but I don't keep my receipts.
