Lots of people thought this PC game was going to be vapourware(7 years) like Nuke Dukem Forver but it's official, we are going to see this incredible looking game for the PC:
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is Finished
The game's been sent to manufacturers. Seriously.
March 1, 2007 - It finally happened. At an industry event in San Francisco, THQ announced GSC Game World's S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was finally shipped to manufacturers for production, bringing a development cycle verging seven years to a close. At the venue got a chance to check out two maps, Deserted Factory and Desolated Village, which aren't included in the currently running multiplayer beta.
Deserted Factory looked much like the multiplayer areas we've already seen. The shattered warehouses, rusted machinery, tall grass, and water towers allow for plenty of places to hide, making deathmatches particularly intense. It was a claustrophobic map, with building squashed close together and bits of metal and concrete littering the spaces between. The map had quite a bit of verticality, meaning it's just as important to look up as much as forward and around corners.
The second map, Desolated Village, featured more wide open areas. A few barns and shoddy houses dotted the hilly landscape, providing a few places to find cover, but for the most part sniper rifles seemed more effective on a map of this type. We were told the beta currently running, which will end a week or two prior to release, might be updated to include the Deserted Factory map.
As for GSC Game World's future plans, they're not saying anything specific, other than their team is really excited to get their product out into the public's hands after such a long time. They did hint that an expansion would be likely, but provided no details on when it might come out of what it would include.
One thing that is great about a lot of the new up coming FPS releases is the openness of the game, instead of being forced down a narrow path (IE Half-Life 2, Quake 4, Doom 3, etc ) you can approach a situation several different ways... such as sneaking in a back way or go in the front way and try to take out everyone...
