Recommend a surround sound set-up for my X360/HD-DVD system...
Howdy folks,
I'm in the market for a low-cost 5.1 system. I'll be hooking it up to my Xbox360/hd-dvd player. Any recommedations? I don't need one with a built it DVD p;player since I primarily use the HD-DVD player now. I'm hoping to stay under $500 if possible. I don't need a superb one since my apartment is pretty small. Thanks!
i'm about to buy a pioneer 7.1 receiver and polk audio 5.1 setup on amazon...like $440 shipped...my friend recommended it...i'll pick up 2 more rear channel speakers soon to finish off the 7.1 system

You shouldn't have to spend a ton, remember the differences in the mid range to high end are probably tough to recognize in a normal home where your acoustics per room are so vastly different.
I bought a Harmon Kardon setup, and it was around $2k, took it back got the $500 system and while I could tell a difference it really wasn't all that due to the dynamics of the room and it wasn't justifable to spend the extra $1500.
I bought these for my PC:
The controller allows inputs from multiple devices, including the XBox and the PS2. It's the Logitech Z5500. Costs around $300, sounds great. 1000W peak.

I was looking at that earlier. Anyone know anything about using optical cables for connection? Gimmicky? Good? No Good? comments? Will this system accept an optical cable?
I'm curious since my 360 has an optic/out and I've never used it before.

This system will take multiple optical connections. Optical is the way to go for surround sound audio.

That's what I got. They are highly rated. It has 1 direct input, 1 optical , and 1 coaxial digital. It has onboard decoding for dts, dd, pro logic. I paid a little over $100 for them with a dell concession coupon about a year ago.
