I just purchased a NAS for home since we both have laptops and a desktop that is overloaded and slow! So I looked into what was available and found this sucker! I've installed them for clients but most are muti-TB systems and way out of my price range! I was surprised hard drives have come down so much, this unit cost me less than 60 cents a GB!
What are your thoughts on this for centralized storage and remote file access? I'm kind of amped to get it hooked up!
I'd recommend at least a 2 drive raid system. Netgear has a nice one--2x250gb hard drives, mirrored. Should cost you under $400. SC101TNA is their part#.

Uh, this is a 2 drive unit and supports RAID 0 & 1. Also, the supported drive size says unlimited but I am sure there is a limit. Another Hammer system has 2-1.5TB drives so it at least holds 1.5 TBs drives.

Well, Newegg's specs suck then. No where is it mentioned that its a 2 drive system or any RAID capabilities.
Also, who's making 1.5TB drives? Hitachi was the first out with their 1tb drives. I'm betting its just a couple of 750gb drives.
I've been looking into NAS devices heavily with capabilities of doing a lot of different things. One device that I have found is the dlink dns 323. Typically I stay away from dlink products but from the reviews at Tomshardware.com in the NAS performance charts For the money its about the same price as the Hammer NAS once you add a 500gig hard drive. From what I can tell it seems like a pretty solid NAS as long as you upgrade to the newest firmware before installing hard drives. I personally want to get this device mainly because it supports gig ethernet, has good throughput, and has a built in UPNP server to stream video and music to my media devices.
For the price and features the Hammer unit was it. I used your performance chart link and given what I needed/wanted the next best thing was $800+
Yeah, I would have opted for a media server that the PS3 could have connected to but it's not like I use it much to begin with.

This is what we had, "old" computer being use to share file, print serv. Had nothing left to ftp serv and media serv was out of the question (NAS I got doesn't Media serv).
After the easy setup and moving files (3 hours for 100GB) I am very satisfied with this. I've been accessing it from work via ftp and the speed is not bad at all!
