So I went into Gamestop tonight against my better judgment (it REEKED of nerd sweat; regular patrons of GS know what I'm talking about and are probably responsible for that stench thereto) and I asked the simple question of when Modern Warfare 2 comes out.
The stooge behind the counter told me that it's coming out next week and that if I don't place a preorder with GS, that there is no way I would get a copy because it will be sold out everywhere and generally tried the hard sell (complete BS, there are going to be megatons of copies of that game shipped and it will be impossible not to walk into any store and pick up a copy; the limited edition on the other hand...). I proceeded to laugh and said I'll take my chances (anyone who knows GS knows that they are infamous for over-pushing preorders and used game sales).
So this gots me to thinking, why would any sane person preorder a game? Unless it's a rare game or there are preorder bonuses, it makes no sense whatsoever especially considering that many stores give walk up bonuses during release day or week or many stores sell games below MSRP during release day or week (GS is not known for doing either). For instance, here are my last three game purchases and the extra stuff I got that I wouldn't have gotten preordering through GS:
-Tekken 6 from Toys R Us with a $10 gift card
-Halo 3: ODST from Toys R Us with a $20 gift card
-Uncharted 2 from Amazon taking advantage of their buy 2, get 1 free special
I guess GS wouldn't push so hard if there weren't morons out there who fall for it but why do said morons fall for it?

I know what you mean. They remind me of car salesman. To answer your question, the only time I pre-order a game is if it unlocks a character, item or etc. (ie Scarecrow challenge for arkham asylum). I never reserve a game solely on getting it on the release date...especially since I usually won't have time to open/play with it until a few weeks down the road.
Or at Toys'Rus, for ODST, I preordered it so I can get the ODST action figure. Can't find it anywhere for retail price.

I like Amazon for pre-orders but I don't do too many - they do a price guarantee so if you pre-order at the higher amount they'll credit your back. I wouldn't pre-order a game from gamestop b/c I don't trust 'em.
after i preordered halo3 and paid it off before release day, i noticed that the people who didnt preorder were just walking in and buying it and leaving while all the dumbasses (me included) waited in line for like 3 hours. never again. modern warfare 2 was my last preorder. if you cant find a way to purchase a mass produced video game then you dont deserve to be playing. lmao gamestop is retarded. and yes it smells like nerd sweat... especially if one of the cashier's is like the ones ive seen 400lbs with a fanny pack filled with snickers and flaming hot cheetos
yea i stopped pre ordering games once a friend of mine who is in the retail industry told me that every store in the company he works for gets AT LEAST 150 copies of any game that is expected to be a hot seller. usually it'll take two or three days from the launch date for it to sell out...so i take my chances...hasnt failed me yet =D
I don't buy many new games, but when a big game goes on pre-order that I know I will buy (MW for instance) I put down $5 solely so that I will get an email to remind me that the game is out, and I pick it up a few days later.
It would probably be easier to just buy it from Amazon an have it shipped to me when it comes out...
I pre ordered MW2 for the simple fact that I am guaranteed a game on the day it comes out and I don't have to go store hopping to find it if they do sell out. Most GS's around here are throwing parties for this game starting around 8:00pm since there are already so many pre orders. It does not cost anything extra to do it, and everywhere is going to have the same price. No store is going to sell one of the most anticipated games of the year at a discount. I dont really see the big deal.

i always tell a similiar story when it comes to pre ordering games. this happened to a buddy of mine.
theyre not going to make a limited amount of the game so theres no way its going to sell out of stores, why pre order?
The only reason why I pre-order something (which is rare) is if I have the money to pay for it then and there. I already bought MW2 and Dragon Age (PC). I was told I couldn't buy anymore games this year lol...
I preorder at amazon, free second day shipping, no tax, best price gaurantee, and triple points on my reward card. Not to mention it saves me a trip to the store.

my local gamestop seems to have nothing but hot chicks working at it. baffles me. the other close one I go to sometimes has the typical anti social nerds in it though.
well yea i preordered so i dont get stuck driving around looking for a copy. i HAVE seen games not available on release day. AND i usually throw down money before it comes out so when it does come out i dont have to worry about paying the full amount or paying at all.
I preordered $50 and got $10 giftcard from walmart
I don't see the downside.
Maybe the GS guy was just trying to offer you advice and not see you go empty handed on Nov 10, aka MW2 day or Take a day off work day or Call in Sick day or Skip class day
