First and for-most, as you will read with any any review on Heavy Rain, you cannot jump into this game and judge it until after at-least 1-2 hours into play!
The little known Quantic Studios just published Heavy Rain; a fast pace, high thrill, film noir style game. The game starts very bright and happy, and then turns to dark and gritty. Heavy Rain takes normal everyday people and puts them in extreme situation-- the tag line to this game is "how far will you go to save the one you love?”
Now I will say Heavy Rain, although amazing, is not for everyone. It is very dialog heavy at some points and at others very slow. But for every slow part, you get two to three extremely tense parts that will have you sitting on edge! All situations involve a series of button pushing and joystick movement. When prompted in conversation you determine how it goes. While in a life or death situation, you have seconds to choice whether or not your character dies or lives. If you character dies the game continues and that character will be gone for good... good thing there are four playable characters!
The plot to this game involves the Origami Killer. With eight killings in two years, its time for them to be stopped. But how will the characters you play get involved? Without giving away anything, the characters you play include: Ethan Mars (the dad), Scott Shelby (the PI), Norman Jayden (the Fed), and Madison Paige (the girl). Every character has there own role in the game, but can affect the game for another character depending on how they take care of a situation. Like I said before if a character you play dies, the game continues and that part of the story is taken away. As the FBI agent you have very cool tools to help at crime scenes. As the PI you have great conversation skills and can get the answer one way or another. The female you play is very limber and can take care of herself. The dad… well you will just have to play to see!
Personally, I love this game! The fast passed game play is amazing and even the slow parts are great! Some scenes are extremely tense and I caught myself sitting at the edge of the couch playing. Other parts you almost feel bad for some of the characters and seem to feel their emotional level. Like I stated earlier, please do not judge this game with only one to two hours of game play in. As soon as the intro play is over, the game is a non-stop roller coaster of CRAZY! Character development is another great aspect of this game because every character is connected in one way or another. Every situation is judge on how you want it to happen. If you want to argue, then argue and if you want to stay calm, be calm. Every decision you pick changes the ENTIRE game. There are dozen of possible endings and a million ways to take care of a situation.
Score: 9/10

I played through the demo and was kind of torn. Part of it felt like I was watching a movie with minor inputs, and other parts were very interesting and interactive. It did play a little slow to me with some very awkward controls (perhaps just different from what I am used to). The visuals were very impressive and I was quickly immersed, but at time frustrated (investigating the crime scene by the train tracks took me a while to figure out what I supposed to be doing).
I can see where a demo to a game of this caliber would be hard to judge something about it felt a bit strange to play. I like that it was so different though, very engaging with the story more so than the interactivity.
Will probably pick this one up used or once the price drops a tad.
So lookin' forward to this. Was hesitant at first (crappy ads, commercials, marketing), but after seeing the review on ign, I'm sold. Will give it a shot. Finaly...something different.

Great game so far, I'm impressed. Controls aren't great and the voice acting is obviously done by a few whose English is only acceptable but overall, a tremendous and thought provoking game.
On a side note, it's amazing how many experimental, innovative games have landed on the PS3. Everything from Heavy Rain, to flower, to the Pixeljunk series, and everything in between has been innovative, experimental stuff.
Because Heavy Rain is not a shooter/racer or other derivative, it would have no chance on that "other" platform (whose only experimental game I can think of is Braid).

I finished it last night. Working in the game industry and having played thousands of games I would like to say that this was a breath of fresh air. I played Indigo Prohphecy back on the original xbox so I knew what to expect.
Overall I found that I became emotionally attached to some of the characters. My fiancee who was watching me play couln't turn away as she wanted to know what was going to happen next. It was worth the $60.
Pros
Good use of QTE
Awesome Story with a lot of different outcomes. The story actually changes based on your decisions.
Impressive Graphics.
Very easy to play even at the hardest difficulty. Anyone can play it.
Brought out Emotions something most games fail to do except anger, frustration, and elation.
Cons
Movement model is dated. Like RE1 style
The Patch screwed up my game and created more bugs like Audio cutting out during key scenes (Don't patch it if you can)
Lipsynch tech is dated compared to ME1&2
Some voice actors sounded bad. Like they were reading from the script.
Very satisfied player right here. The wife can't stop watching the game unfold as I play and she HATES video games.
BTW, adreneline junkies, patience plays a huge part in this game. There's alot of decisions to be made and you are better off thinking and analyzing than pushing through the events.

Just started this last night and I must say it looks stunning. The controls are different but in a good way. Plus the fact that you have to keep their thoughts in mind and the way it's so interactive is revolutionary. It's almost like The Sime but on steroids.

Am about 3 1/2 hours into it and its alright so far. Am not feeling that need to keep going with it just yet but from what I have heard it takes some time so I am being patient. The controls are different and it doesnt feel like a normal game which I kind of like.
While the graphics arent the best, it does have some good elements to it and hope it keeps getting better.

Does anyone know how long the game is here?
I think I clocked like 12-15 hours. Cant remember without looking at my save!

The time can be different depending on what actions you take or don't take. On my second play through I had a longer game. Even though I had some scenes memorized by making different choices I played an extra 4 scenes (levels).

But 10-15 hours sounds about right.
Good point, forgot to mention that doing different options can add or delete scenes!
