so what do straps do? Just wrap around the bar for a better grip?
They help support the weight rather than relying on your grip strength. I never use them because you get stonger without them. Plus it's less crap in the gym bag.

so when I physically deadlifted 425 last week, I didnt really lift it because I didnt do it 6 times?
+1
I've seen Kevin Nee, Derek Poundstone and Mariuz Pudzianowski use straps in their training. And they are three of the strongest guys on the planet.

It's not cheating and in fact it allows you to focus on the muscle you are targeting more than losing your grip. It's just that some of us old school purists think you should squat barefoot, avoid machines where possible, do the stuff people hate to do, and not use straps.

Wrap around your wrist and then the strap wraps around the bar so you don't have to use your grip to hold on to the bar, the weight is also supported by the straps around your wrists.

Believe me phreak, JROCK shares the same ideals about weightlifting that we do. That sunnabish tought me about board presses, lockouts, and box squats

Ooooooh!
It still heavily relies on your arm strength I'd think.

Thank you....I was amazed at how much more weight I could put up and......how much bigger I got while using straps.
I would agree that its a good idea not to use straps if you don't have to, but when you get to that much weight its an incredible thing and I'm not going to hold it against him one bit.
People need to get over using straps. I have limited hand strength and it allows me to work.......WHAT IM TRYING TO FACKING WORK OUT!!!!!!!!!!
I don't consider being able to lift anything unless you can do FROM 6 times.
I am over it, I don't use them If you stopped using straps, your limited hand strength would come up, as long as you use straps, your hand strenght will never catch up.
I don't have anything against them (I used to use them back in college on my heaviest sets) but a long time ago I decided to ditch them and after the initial drop in poundages as my grip adapted, I feel I am better off without them. I think you build more "functional" strenght without the aid of straps etc.
to each his own, as long as you're lifting, it's all good brah!
