what do you guys prefer morning or late night workouts? how many of you eat before you lift or hit the gym.
personally i hit the gym at 5:30am and cant eat anything before I work out or I get extremely sick. After my lifting sessions I do eat like I have never eaten before.
I too get up at 5:30 to do my routine in my basement (maybe get a 2-a-day a couple times a week w/ an afternoon bonus workout at work, if my schedule allows).
Everyone's work, living, and family situation is so different, but I can no longer rely on getting consistent workouts during my "lunch" at work. And it's difficult to find the time for squeezing it in once I commute home, do dinner w/ my family, and put my young son (and soon to arrive daughter) to bed.
So I'm up early too. Makes the most sense w/ my schedule. Has me feeling pretty charged for the rest of the day (or at least most of it). And it forces me to go to bed at a halfway decent time!
work about 11-12 hr day go straight from work to gym(about 8-9 mile drive)eat snack before workout and hydrate before and during exercise, take pre-workout supplement, work out for about 1 1/2 - 2hrs drive home about 35-40 miles, eat protein bar usually toward end of workout and during drive home, get home get shower and clean up-have protein shake and go to bed. do this 3 days a week M W F

It's really not a great idea to lift weights on an empty stomach. The glycogen stores in your muscles will be quickly depleted and your body will have to synthesize glucose from protein which means wasting muscle for energy. Your cortisol levels will also get higher faster which is also counterproductive for muscle growth. I wake up and eat a big breakfast at 7am. About 50g protein and about 80-90g complex carbs and hit the gym about 1 hour to 1 hour and a half later.
As far as the morning versus night debate. I remember seeing studies showing that natural testosterone levels are higher in the morning which could be a benefit. At the same time I've read that working out at night keeps your metabolism going when it would normally be winding down. So I would say it's probably a wash. Whichever time period fits your schedule is what I would do.

interesting..... but its really hard for me to eat that early(trust me I've tried but 9/10 times i just ending up getting nausea and cant work out)
in the morning and unfortunetly its the only real time I can make it to the gym because of work and spending time at home with the wife and kids any suggestions on what can be done?

Well I would try going to bed earlier and waking up earlier in order to eat before working out. If you really can't do that, the next best option is to find another time of the day to work out. If that's really not an option either, then on days before you train, make your last meal one consisting of protein and a complex carb, that could provide some energy for your workout since you train so early in the morning. Either that, or if you wake up in the middle of the night and eat something but that may be more inconvenient.
Low intensity cardio is great to do on an empty stomach because it's not muscle intensive so your body doesn't pull from your glycogen stores for energy as much. As such, it's good for getting lean because you're not using food for energy.
The problem with training on an empty stomach is for the reasons I posted above you will most likely make minimal progress and reach a plateau much earlier. Breaking through that plateau will also be more difficult. 80% of everything is diet, and without the right foods at the right times your body will not be able to respond, recover, and adapt as well as it could if everything was right.

actually in the morning cortisol levels spike upon wakeup. free testosterone and energy are at its highest at 6pm. or 3/4 through the day depending if you sleep during the day and work at night..etc, etc.

That's contradictory to what I've read. Do you have any links to studies to verify this? I have no problem being corrected

These three sources that support my statement that free testosterone is highest in the morning. The last one even puts a time on it, (8am), while it also states that it is lowest at night (9pm).
If you have anything to back up your statement I would love to read it.

^^^ so my work out time is in a good slot for what my schedule allows, now I just need to figure out how to get some clean carbs in before my work out.
what if I dont feel tired, hungry, or exhausted during my workout? cause I rarely get hungry during my work outs and if I do I always have a banana and granola bar in my gym bag that I can eat.

Oats
They are carbs and most of it is all dietary fiber.

Like The Captain said, oats are great. Bananas are not a great choice because the carbs in fruit replenish glycogen stores in the liver, not in the muscle. A better choice would be oats, barley, pancakes, etc.
You don't feel tired because your body is used to having to work out without food. It has adapted to those conditions. Your body is smarter than you are and will adapt to just about anything you throw at it. I guarantee if you start eating before you work out, after a while you won't know how you ever did it any other way.

^^^ makes perfect sense, I will try to get a small bowl of oatmeal in before my workouts might start with small portions about 30 min before my work out and see how that goes.

Good plan. Baby steps are the key. Good luck

My best workouts was when I trained around 7am many years back. Most guys do have more testosterone in the early morning, probably why most wake up with a boner. Visit your local Golds Gym and Powerhouse gym at around 5-6am. The serious hardcore lifters are there.

sorry for not throwing out the backup on the facts. i like to be lazy and just say things hoping no one decides to call BS. here yah go
and i have several other sources that claim the same thing but it just seems redundant to quote 10 billion studies. most guys i see training to get there pro card generally train in the afternoon...but then again they dont exactly have to worry about not having enough test.
Key Points:
Maximal strength is best achieved in the afternoon compared to the morning.
Maximal strength has been casually correlated with body temperature which peaks in the afternoon which may have a “pre-warm” up effect on muscle which may enhance force production.
Interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor, and cortisol all have diurnal variations which are higher in the morning compared to the afternoon which may have a unfavorable training effect
