Do you guys have a suggestion regarding a team or organization to get involved in to help get in shape?
I used to do Marching Band in High School, and that helped me stay in shape. Of course Marching Band was only during the fall and it's not that much of a work out, it's pretty much just standing in the sun and marching around on a football field for a few hours. Even then, that did help a bit.
I never did sports in high school, I just wasn't interested. But now I wish I had... both for my personal health/body and to toughen me up a bit.
I'm now doing P90x and want to throw in something fun outside of home now. I can't catch a football for my life... and I'm not too good at basketball either. Is there anything else that I can join? I was thinking of maybe joining a swimming team? I'm ok at swimming...
I've been thinking of Martial Arts, they seemed kind of pricey and there's not many places here in town, so I'm assuming why they're kind of expensive.
I'd love to learn to fight though... since I've never even been in a fight my whole life.
Is there a specific kind of Martial Arts you recommend? I guess for beginners?
Not a big fan of running, and I've never tried mountain biking.
Mixed Martial Arts (ex. Jujitsu and boxing) combined with weight training. Swimming will get you ripped though.
That's pretty much my goal right now. I've got some pudge on my midsection. After getting rid of that I'd love to start gaining mass.
Are there swimming classes/teams that anyone can join though? Or are we talking about just general swimming?
ultimate frisbee. Mix of soccer / football with a lot of sprinting. Super high cardio workout. There should be a local league you can play pick-up games.
But of course swimming is up there in best cardio workouts

Do you have a community college somewhere that does night classes? It's cheaper for you to try those out and get a feel for what you're into.
If you just want to be able to defend yourself then maybe a combo of boxing and jujitsu? (like MDHRZ mentioned). There's got to be plenty of boxing places in your area. It'll get you lean, you can train almost anywhere, plus it's useful in case you need to chin-check some fool who threatens your life.
+1 on cycling and watersports. Not sure what kind of maountain terrain there is in TX. But if possible, you could also take up skiing or snowboading in the winter. Bacpacking is great as well.

Snowboarding looks fun... but it doesn't snow where I live, I'd have to travel a few hours to get somewhere where I can snowboard or skii...
Backpacking... Not sure where to do that. I live in a very flat area of Texas.

I do have a community college, Midland College (midland.edu), and they do offer night classes. I'm actually needing to sign up for a PE class this fall... So i'll see what they have available. I heard their kickboxing and martial arts classes are whack, they're more for cardio than actual fighting.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great martial art. It will help you drop pounds quick, it will make you stronger, and it will teach you a lot. It is also not a martial art that will leave you feeling too beat up. You will probably get some sort of injury, ex. bloody nose, sore shoulder, but nothing bad. Once you get some experience under your belt you could transition to muay thai, which will also help you shed weight. Expensive is the name of the game, totally worth it though.

agreed on the BJJ. I have been training for about 3 months already and I have dropped from 185 with no cardio/endurance to 165 with good cardio/endurance.
To the OP, I used to do the whole weight training and it just got boring. I didn't want to just work individual parts of my body to get beach muscles, I wanted to really get my body to be able to withstand constant resisting motion. I have grappled with meat heads and although at the beginning they are strong, give them 1 maybe 2 mins and they will tire themselves out. And the rounds are anywhere from 3 - 6 min. But honestly jiu jitsu has definitely put me into better shape then when I was in my early 20's (i am 30 now) Definitely get into it cause although you may get tapped out left and right, once you realize how much your body hurts it is a wonderful feeling knowing that you are getting some serious exercise going on.
