Default Short shifter install question

Something I'm curious about, these short shift kits look identical to me, and there are plenty of copies as well (I'm sure it's all from the same place anyway):

Spec D

B&M
http://www.bmracing.com/products/451...&md=&smd=&eng=

However, if you look at their PDF manuals, they differ slightly although the same design:

http://site.specdtuning.com/SpecD_Pr...ortShifter.pdf

Essentially the B&M manual shows that you should re-use the gold OEM mounting plate on-top of the blue anodized plate.
Yet the SpecD one doesn't say that you are required to use it, nor does it say you need to file away a little bit of the casing.

I just wondered what the use of installing the original mounting plate is ?

More throw reduction, simple install.

If I remember correctly, the gold plate is your reverse lockout. If you don't have it finding 5th will be tricky and you can accidentally go to reverse.

Ah I see.
I'll have a play with it again today.
I was having problems going from 5-6, as in because there's no guide it felt a bit odd.
You can't slip it into reverse though, you still have to push down in order to get that.
Aside from that, it feels fantastic!

I popped the oem plate back on as well (makes sense as that's why I got extended bolts), 5-6 issue solved.
Slotting into reverse is a bit tricky but it looks like the bottom right of the widest section (with the small bolt running through it) just catches the oem plate. I'll just file a tiny bit off of that wide section.
Aside from that, with the poly transmission mount and this, it feels very positive in action. (note my one is just the cheap eBay one)

This is also a very useful thread to help out with aligning the plate:

https://my350z.com/forum/engine-driv...alignment.html

But just to re-iterate:

9) Move the shifter into the 6th gear position and make the notch sticking out of the shifter level with the shifter plate "guide" by slightly pushing down on the shifter.
Move the shifter plate (the plate with the 3 bolts) accordingly to make sure the "guide" on the plate is touching the shifter.
Once that is accomplished, at the same time tighten the bolt at the right rear on the plate (to keep it in place).

10) Now move the shifter into the 5th gear position and align the shifter notch with the plate like I explained in step #9.
When it is aligned right and touching then you tighten the bolt at the front of the guide plate (closest to the engine).

**side note**
The reason the shifter notch has to touch the side of the plate is so that it guides the shifter into the 6th gear from fifth; as well as when you push down to go into reverse the notch goes underneath the plate to make it go into the reverse gear. Once there is the correct alignment the other gears are in synchronization as well.

11) Tighten the left bolt now then torque them all down to 88 inch pounds

After you have tightened them all down try going through all of the gears and see if it feels right.
Make sure when your going from 5th to 6th the shifter notch is touching and going along the plate guide for the proper alignment of all the gears.
