Question Changing steering wheel controls from 04 to 07

Good evening,

I've recently changed my CC and audio controls (the caps+buttons) in my car with new ones. These new ones came of a 07 model 350z (I like the lights in them).
Now of course the lights don't work in my 04 Z.
I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix this?

I've been over the forum and however the question has been asked before, usually this incorporated different issues (as in the controls don't work, which is not the case with me).

Just to be clear, it's just the lights in the buttons that don't work. As this was added in the Z later, I'm trying to figure out what I need to change to make them work.

Thanks in advance!

The interior wiring harness in the early 350Zs is different from the mid-model updated versions. In my experience, there was no 'plug and play' solution for retrofitting a later model steering wheel to an early model Z33. No backlighted switches and no way to gain headunit/radio control.

I've got the radio control, just not the lights.. hmm i'll have to dig in the wiring to find some way to power them then. Thanks for the response!

If anyone has a different idea, let me know!

I do not have a schematic, but what you want to find is the radio wire labeled "illumination ". It is the way the backlight for the radio comes on with parkers/headlights.
If you can track it back into the radio harness you may not have to pull it.
Good luck.

you'd really want to hit the wire inside the steering wheel though, as its connected to the clock spring that way.

I did it years ago, You have to run extra wires from the spiral cable to any illuminated light aource, mine is hooked to the VDC-OFF switch.

It's an easy job if you know how to use a multimeter and read the FSM.

I'm planning to remove the lower steering column cover to install the illuminated 08 ignition ring, Will take some pics and update the thread.

Ok, Here you go, Had a free hour today so thought I would prepare the wiring for the ignition ring.

- 05 Spiral cable has 7 pins
- 08 Spiral cable has 8 pins
- Missing Pin # 8 in 05 is the pink wire, Should be grounded all the time, I hooked it to the steering wheel;

- Get a long enough wire with a female pin in one side and the other side connected to the illumination source, VDC switch in my case.

- Picture below showing where the extra pin is inserted in the plug:

Finally before, Putting everything back together, Use an ohm-meter to test continuity between the yellow wire on the controllers plug and the wire connected to the VDC switch.

Illumination is working fine and headunit control also.

Done,

The pic I attached is from a 08, Check out the video here

I believe the immobilizer unit in the 08 has thinner plastic ring. Infiniti on the other hand will fit over the immobilizer unit,

If the 08 ring you bought doesn't fit, Then I might order the infiniti one and test it.
