Olympic cycling champ floored by MotoGP Mamola Ducati ride

Stuart O'Grady suffers a seizure following Desmosedici pillion ride

AN AUSTRALIAN Olympic cycling champion suffered a seizure after a ride on Ducati's Desmosedici two-seater racer at the Valencia MotoGP circuit on Sunday.

Stuart O'Grady collapsed soon after the high speed ride on the back of former GP god Randy Mamola but has now been given the all-clear and released from hospital.

Medical experts believe the nasty turn was probably triggered by the stress on his body from the extreme experience.

"When the ride finished of course I could feel my heart rate soaring, my blood pressure rising, but I didn't give it much more thought," said O'Grady, who has also won two stages of the Tour de France.

"But then I started having blotchy vision and 20 minutes later I had a seizure and collapsed."

Crikey, cobber!

BMW Concept 6

Yes, we know this BMW is a pair of wheels short of CAR...

Yes, we know this BMW is a pair of wheels short of CAR Online’s usual offerings, but we couldn’t resist giving some space to this stunning straight six-powered BMW sports bike concept.

Now I'm interested - this BMW Concept 6 has a straight-six engine?

Yes, you read that right - the BMW Concept 6 has a 1600cc straight six slung across the frame. Honda tried something similar for the CBX1000 in the 1970s but the idea never really caught on even if the true width increase over a contemporary four wasn’t as huge as your eyes would have you believe.

Modern manufacturing techniques have allowed BMW to place the cylinders much closer together with the result that the engine is 100mm narrower than previous six-pot efforts and appears far narrower than the company’s own Boxer twins. All the electrical ancillaries are positioned behind the crankshaft and above the transmission, and the centre of gravity is kept low by titling and dry sumping the straight six.

BMW claims power is on a par with its 1.3-litre fours, so around 160bhp, but offers 96lb ft of torque from just 2000rpm while still retaining an ability to rev to 9000rpm and offering even better fuel consumption and much improved NVH.

The engine will find its way into BMW’s K-series touring bikes in 2010 where it will battle the likes of the Honda Goldwing, but sadly the Concept 6 itself will remain just a concept.

Still, we can all admire the carbonfibre fuel tank, white-painted aluminium body panels, LED lights and glorious exhaust. There's also drive-by-wire controls, 17-inch forged wheels and a minimalist LED display

Point of Knee Dragging?

Since I am 2 months into my first sportbike, numerous questions abound. I read this great article on knee dragging here:
http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171467

However I do not really see the point of knee dragging. Why not just lean and be done with it.

I would think it was only for fun, but I see the proriders doing it.
Is it to prevent oneself from going down too far, and prevent the pegs from scraping, or is it kinda like a surfer dragging his hand in a wave.

Is it necessary to do this to get the full lean angle of the bike or is it simply just safer?

Thanks.
