It's ugly, it's not sexy nor terribly expensive like a fancy Kimber or a Sig or H&K...but my Glock is very pleasant to shoot, compact (even in a 10 round .45) and easy to maintain/reliable.
I have the Glock 30 w/ pinkie rest on the mag. 10+1 .45 cal.
Get a sig I have a P226 .40 S&W...really nice gun...reliable as hell and not a PITA to maintain. Whats really cool is that you can switch out the barrel for a .357 sig if you would like...
Also, what will the pistol be used for? Target shooting...plinking around...home defense? If your just looking for a plinker, you can get that beretta that you want...9mm ammo is cheap compared to a .45
I've got a Glock 22C (compensated 40 cal.) and love it. It's light weight, low maintenance, a durable and dependable gun. H&K and Sig's are nice too. Great for home defense. I also have 9mm Star for plinking. I think a Beretta, Ruger, Springfield in 9mm would be good for that purpose.
if you are looking into glocks you may as well take a look at the springfield armory xd9. They havn't been tested with 500,000 rounds like the glocks have but I have heard of a few well over 200,000. I found them to be more accurate than the glocks and they have gotten great reviews. Another nice thing since I got the 9mm before the AWB sunset I was able to use a 40cal clip with 15 9mm shells in it, so the hi-cap clips were cheaper, though I doubt thats a big deal now since the law is no more.
springfield armory 1911 GI 45 is my choice. its what is in my closet anyway.
its a classic appeal. one of the few designs left that looks like a gun and not a toy. and springfield is a great value. I paid 400$ for my gun at a gun show.
I carry a Glock 26 9mm. It's my favorite gun. light weight and user friendly. never jammed on me either. I also have a S&W 45 Chief Special. It's not too easy to work unless you have big hands. Shoots very straight but jams alot.

Get a Glunk if you don't care what your weapon looks like and you can't shoot and need alot of rounds. Works fine but is ugly and most of the times has a crappy trigger.
Get a Sig P220 if you like decent looks, can shoot well and don't need so many rounds. Great weapon, no external safety to worry about. Shoots great.
HK weapons are nice but, some of them have had frame problems. Go check out the http://hkpro.websolv.com/ boards here. They are kind of large. Decent weapon but, i am not a fan of polymer weapons.
Get a Colt 45 Government model if you like a tricked out, great looking, great firing weapon. Most 45s on a 1911 frame look great and can be tricked to the way you like it. There is nothing you can't have done to a Colt 45 govie.
Mine was made in 1951. Had it hard chromed 4 years ago. Custom trigger, ambi safety, mag well, 3 dot sights, oversize mag release, custom beavertail grip safety, skeleton hammer and Bar-sto barrel.
Kimber puts out some amazing weapons also. Can't go wrong with Kimber.

compensated barrel can be bad for home defense actually. in the dark that muzzle flash will blind you for a second shot. good for target shooting though; and hopefully thats all you ever need to do with it
I can't really answer this until I found out what it will be used for. I've fired nearly every pistol on the market (and some that are not). So let me know what you need it for and I'll try to help you figure it out.
