I just want to know the basic do's and don'ts regarding owning a pistol in Ca.
I have no experience and have yet to do any real shopping, I'm just looking for some basic rules so as to not PO the wrong authorities.
I'm planning a road trip to Utah in the near future, and I may or may not have a firearm before then (not likely, but just in case...), so that could complicate things a bit. Then again, I figure that CA has pretty much the strictest carry laws around, so hopefully I should be ok. If not, please let me know.
thanks.

For Cali, as far as I know you need the following:
Handgun safety permit. Take a test at just about any local gun store or gun club, or shooting range.
When you do purchase a fire arm, you need to bring proof of residency in the form of a bill tied to a physical address or car registration, and a valid california ID linked to said proof of residancy.
Then after you purchase the pistol, while storing it you must have a locking container for it, or you can use a trigger lock or a locking cable that goes in through the ammo feed and out through the breach. If you store ammo in the same container as the pistol the pistol must be locked in a sepparate fashion than the ammo.
When transporting a firearm, the pistol and ammunition must be in a locked container, or the pistol can be locked separately within another container. The ammo and the pistol must be out of reach of the driver of the vehicle.
I think with the exception of D.C. and New York, Cali has the strictest gun laws. For all intents and purposes the assault weapon ban is still in effect here, because even during the assualt weapon ban, cali passed an even stricter version of it. Never mind the fact that violent crime due to firearms hasn't dropped and the law is entirely "feel good." Or that the people who practice olympic target shooting are not allowed to own some of the target pistols because they are "assault weapons".
And don't get me started on the .50 Cal Ban. That was a waste of a few million dollars in legislature.
If catapults are outlawed, only outlaws will have catapults: (Law is for the law abiding).
I dont live in california obviously. but Ive heard from people that do; if you live in any populated county, you can basicly forget about a carry permit. so essentially, the gun is for home protection and target shooting only. you cant have it loaded anywhere else, so its of no use.
as for a road trip; Id say it is best to leave it at home. depends what state your going to as to if they will accept another states permit.
Also while transporting a weapon when able the weapon must be in a diffrerent area then the ammunition. In other words the ammo in the trunk and weapon in the glove box/underseat/etc. Or vice versa. If you are military you are not required to attend the safety course. Fruthermore if you purchase it on base there is no waiting period.

My S&W Sigma 9mm is limited to a 10rd magazine. I think thats the max mag size you're allowed in CA.
Dave (had to leave the high cap mags in Reno with his folks)
Yup this is true as well. Have a Ruger .40 cal can only have 10 round mag for as well.

yeah, in CA all pistols (and presumably rifles) can only have a 10-round magazine. Low-J's link was pretty helpful.
According to it, in CA,
It's actually possible to get an open-carry permit, but you have to live in a county with less than 200k people in it (def. not around here). Concealed carry permits are also possible, basically, 21 or older, no felonies, and a good reason. It's the last clause that is the hold up; it is usually up to the Sheriff's Dept, and your chances vary from county to county. Supposedly, there are ~45k concealed carry permits in ca.
I doubt that I have time to do this before my trip, so it'll get put on the back burner. I do have a really nice breaker bar, and I've needed a good camping knife for a while, so I'm sure I will be fine.
thanks for all the input

The MAXIMUM mind numbing life changing fear-me blow California justice can drop upon your tender head for first time illegal concealed carry is a whopping $200.
You can't be a known gang member, also have a knife, or be in the commission of a felony.
California was one of the first states in the union to have a "home is your castle law" - Texas being the other that I know of. Florida added themselves to that list last month.

home is your castle? what does that mean? you can shoot a person in your home? if so; I thought that was legal everywhere... I know it is in georgia. but then again I think we're right behind texas in gun lax.
I got a gun with a drivers liscense and a smile.
and I can get a CC permit with 32$ or so. no questions asked. itll take about 6months; but whatever.

I'm not sure about what states allow what, but I've heard a few stories about people going to prison for shooting intruders in their own homes. One of those stories in this (seemingly low-budget) documentary:
I e-mailed the CA General Attorney General about bringing my AR-15 to CA and they acutally called me back to answered my questions. I guess they were serious about this kind of stuff. So you might want to give them a call, that way you get the info right from the horses mouth.
yeah, CA is really liberal. CA don't even recognize permits for law enforcement officers in other states!

Every state has different laws. In Co its also known as the "Make my Day Law" which states that if a person enters your dewelling (does not include front or back yard), commits a crime other than tresspassing, and posses any threat no matter how slight, you may use deadly force on the intruder.
In CA you must feel that your life is threaten before the law allows you to use deadly force and I think in Texas and Arizona, if some looks at you funny from across the street you may lob a granade at them as long as you attend church the next day.

Hahaha, you owe me a new keyboard...I just spit coke all over mine and ruined it....
Also the only way to get a CCWP is if 1. you carry lots of money or high value items. 2. Have had you life threatened and its on file with the police. 3. A no police record whatsoever. 4. And you kiss major *** to the Sherrif in the county you want one in.
I have a friend who is a deputy and he was telling me about all this since I wanted one. He basicly said "good luck, be easier just to become a cop then you can carry it whenever"
