Default Personal Firearmes Questions??? (Hand gun)

Okay, so Im about to be in the market for a handgun. Mainly for home security, and the occasional murder... I mean... target practice. So how exactly do I go about getting qualified or whatever? And about how long does that take. As of now im not 21 yet, but I was wondering if I could get all of the paperwork and background things done so I can have all of it done by the time Im ready to buy. Also, any suggestions on what is nice? Im trying to keep the price cheap, possibly used due to the fact that it is my first gun. Preferably 9MM, nothing huge. My g/f likes to shoot as well.

Oh and also I live in Ohio, does anyone know how to go about getting their concealed license?

though i'm sure we've talked about this many times... if you're looking for home security, you'd be better off with a shotgun w/ birdshot

In Texas you can have a rifle or shot gun at 16 but has to be purchased by parent. You can buy your own at 18. I think handgun is 21.

Pops just picked up an ArmaLite AR-50.

Outta be able to stop somebody

I've got a 9mm Beretta my pops gave me a couple of years ago.

Nothing major, but enough for protection.

As soon as I turn 21 I'm picking up a .45.

http://www.packing.org/ is the best place for that info.

states have different requirements. you'll need to look it up.

in CT it is an NRA pistol course ($134 or so, one day), file an application with town (incl prints etc), wait for state, get state approval, get picture, get permit. lengthy process, about 3 months total (most of it waiting for them to clear you and call you to get the actual permit). lots of certified checks etc. good for 5 years. in CT only permit is a CCW.

shotgun with buckshot (about .38 cal ball) will group effectively to about 25 yards. ineffective for man sized targets after that. won't penetrate a lot so you won't shoot someone next door by accident.

there are rounds like that for handguns. small pellets in a capsule. Glaser Safety rounds. Will demolish unprotected targets but won't penetrate too much. high velocity, high report, but appears extremely effective against soft targets.

good luck

*edit* hey I actually answered one question. on what to get - go and shoot a lot of guns (say at a range) and buy what works. for me a 1911 or Glock seem to work (I know, it's like oil and water getting all mixed up). due to budget concerns I haven't gotten either but the glock is about $200 less than the 1911 I want (Para P14). both are high cap, .45, and have loads of accesories out there. I'm no gun nut so haven't shot a lot. Glock, Para, Kimber, Colt, coupla Sigs, coupla USPs, a Ruger, that's it, mebbe 1500 rounds total (this year). oh and a full auto Uzi in NV

Dude birdshot!? Thats just gonna piss someone off, not make them go away. Get some 00 buck shot, and your set. But, Don't think about using slugs for home defense, since I heard those can go through walls and such.

But yes, If you want home security go buy a remington 870. I have one that was used by the "spokane police dept." It's stamped like that and everything too, its really nice. It has the folding stock and combat sites haha...

You go to a freakin class but you can't do it til you're 21 so chill. Their cost is around $130-180 depending where you are and renewal is around $50-80 every year after. Go anywhere that sells guns and they will point you at the closest class.

Good choice on the .45

How large is your house? Most houses are in easy range of a shotgun to blow a big hole in you.
How many shotguns have you fired?

Definately a NRA safety course. First thing is to protect yourself from you.
