If you want a hand gun for home protection. Glock 21 - standard size gun with 13 rounds in the clip. .45 ACP for amo and get the hydro shock bullets. Good enough to stop most people who come through your door.
Or if you want another option, Glock 19, compact size with 17 rounds. 9mm hydro shock.
Or just get both like I did. I love glocks, easy to use and reliable. And also cheaper than H&K and Sigs. Which are probably the other popular guns.
That's kind of like asking what should my first car be or what should my first girlfriend look like?
It's all personal preference. What fits you hand size and strength? Price range? End usage? etc.... Stop by your local reputable gun shops and ask their opinion. It's what they are there for. But hit up a few of them. Try to go find and indoor range. Most ranges have rental guns available. Shoot alot, ask alot of questions. Guns purchases are usually a long term investment. I have guns my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather bought new.
Choose wisely and enjoy your purchase for the rest of your life.
A buddy of mine told me that the Desert Eagles are gas operated, instead of recoil operated, and if you don't clean them thoroughly after every use they clog and jam. Do you guys know anything about this?
be very careful shopping for pistols...not all handguns are created equal.
i hate to see people spending hundreds of dollars getting something that is basically junk. Personally i prefer glock for their extreme reliability and simple design, easy to take down for maintainence. i've owned many different types of pistols before i bought my glock 23, i don't want to name any names but they were name brands. One other pistol i recommend is the Beretta if you don't mind their size. If your life depends on it don't take any chances.
the 9mm glock model 19 has very little recoil....i owned one before i acquired the 40 caliber version.... the 40 caliber(FBI standard issue) has a little more recoil but better penetration and more stopping power.

They are gas operated. With any gas system, they get dirty quick.
Being in Texas, you should have access to many different firearms. I'd suggest you go down to a gun shop and handle a few. If you can go to a range and rent, that would be better. How much you looking to spend? Hard to beat the HK USP Tactical .45.
I know nothing about guns. Can different ammo in a handgun really make a difference? What this hydroshock ammo? And how much are these glocks in question?

Hydroshocks are personal defense rounds that are designed to mushroom out as much a possible upon impact (an engineered hollowpoint) This does two things, 1) causes more damage in the target, 2) is less likley to go through the target and hit someone/something that you did not intend to hit.
Some ammo companys sell personal defense ammo that is of a lower power for better recoil control.
others sell ammo that is loaded "Hot" with more power (usually called +p)
Most glocks will run you between $500-$700 Retail.
I reccomend getting the non adjustable Night Sites option on a full sized (Model 17 or 22 9mm or .40 cal) for your first and only self defense handgun by glock. In 9mm you will have 17+1 rounds in the .40 you will have 15+1. I have a model 19 (compact) in 9mm and a model 22 in .40. They both have about the same recoil, but the longer barrel in the full size model 22 makes a huge difference in accuracy.
Different bullets for different occasions. For range plinking, fmj(full metal jacket) is fine. You will see a cost difference between them too. Caliber makes a big difference too.
Used Glocks can be had for $450. A little more for new.
^^^ That's the kind of posts im talking about. QUIT IT.
exactly...
Anyway as far as ammo, in my H&K Tactical .45 I use Corbon +P.
The +P signifies a little hotter round. Definately not for plinking, even if you have the money, the extra pressure isn't good for the barrel.
