It's come down to it. My CHL renewed license finally came in and I'm ready to get a new piece. I already carry a Glock 26, but decided to go lighter. Right now my choices are either the PM4043 40 cal., or th PM9093 9mm. They weight is identical and so are the dimensions. There is no price difference either. I've never shot a 40 cal., only my Glock 9mm and a S&W 45 Chief Special Compact. I found a local dealer that will sell me the 40 cal. for $540.55 cash. They don't have the 9mm in stock. So I'm ready to go buy it after work, but I decide to ask my gun guru buddy what he thinks. He gives me a whole lot of useful data. He basically says that the 40 cal. will have a sharp nasty kick because a general store bought load will have a heavy grain slug with enough power to project it at around 1100 fps. He said that a 45 has less kick because the slug is heavier and the velocity is only around 845 fps. I really like how my 9mm handles. It's easy to double tap and it's acurate. The 45 is acurate also, but I'm not to crazy about the kick. It takes me a tad bit longer to re-sight and shoot another round, than the 9mm.
What do you guys think about the "kick factor" with 40 cal., compared to the 9mm and the 45?

I'd say get a 9mm, ammo is cheaper, get hydroshock ammo if you're worried about knockdown power, less kick, and just as accurate in self defense unless you're in a olympic pistol shooting event.

I'm not too concerned about the ammo price, but you're right 9mm ammo is alot cheaper. I'm only worried about the "sharp kick" my co-worker was talking about.

Is this topic the classic ammo size vs. accuracy question?
If you're a excellent shot, ammo size doesn't matter since a bullet in the head is a bullet in a head. However, if you're not sure of your shots, you might want .40cal for better stoping power <---some may argue this point to.

Not worried about accuracy, just the ability to fire off shots swift and smoothly. My Glock 26 9mm offers a smooth trigger and little recoil. My compact 45 cal. gives a tad bit too much kick to fire off rounds quick and accurately(double tap). We're discussing whether or not the 40 cal. has a sharper kick than the 45 cal.

Question - What do you guys think about the "kick factor" with 40 cal., compared to the 9mm and the 45?
Unfortunatley, I do not have experience with a .45.
But, I have shot 2 different Sig 9mm and I have shot a Glock, Sig and H&K .40. For me - going from a few clips of .40 rounds to a 9mm is like night and day. The 9mm is like shooting a BB gun. Let it be known though - I am a small man @ 5'9 120. So if you are more muscular than I.. the difference between a 9mm and a .40 might be nothing. I do not mind the kick in my H&K .40.. It is less than that of the Glock.. maybe the same as the Sig. I liked the sights and the feel of the H&K over the Sig though. And I have to say that I heard bad things about the Kahr brand jamming...just what the range guys said.
I prefer the .40 because of the reliability factor - what I mean by that is I expect the .40 hollow-point to take down my target better than a 9mm. I'm not a gun guy.. I only own 1 pistol.. and I want it to do the job if I need it to.
HK has a very good recoil system which is why you feel it less than the Glock.
If you don't feel confident in the .45, you won't with the .40. There's more muzzle flip with the .40 so double taps will be harder. I'd still stick with the .45 and practice more. But, if you have confidence with the 9mm, stick with it. Don't want to doubt your skills when SHTF.
Go with the .40 I cant understand why people choose 9mm when it comes to defense.
Accuracy?? gun fight tend to have no more the two shots fire and at a distance less then 10 feet. dont worry about it.
If recoil is a issue I suggest more practice I've been using a .45 for about 4 years now, I admit at first-- recover from its recoil took awhile, but now I can group double taps quite well now.
There a saying "it not a real gun til it has a 4 in it" something along those lines
go .40 or .45
Plus I strongly reccommend Speer GoldDot and nothing else
Also Desert Eagles are not illegal, easy to find expensive to buy
Forgot to mention I had a Glock 23 (.40 cal) its "kick" was harder then may Kimber elcipse ultra II (.45)
Also about those Speer Golddots those things add a noticable more "kick" over other ammo so if you go with my advice besure to test/practice using those

Ah, still need to worry. A guy I know is a firearms instructor for the PD. In his class, he has a few videos where a cop and perp are less than 3 feet apart, empty both their mags and nobody get's hit. Adrenalin is a funny thing when coupled with panic/stress. He also knows another cop that fired all 8 rounds into the engine of his car. He was taking cover, poped his head over the hood and fired. Priceless reaction after the fact when he can't drive away....lol
I'd rather hit the person twice with a 9mm than miss with a .40/.45. Practice with the .45 and carry the 9mm till you're comfortable with the .45.
This may be off topic but what do you guys carry a gun for? I am in no way against them at all I just never thought everyday people carried them around. Is it just for self defense or what?
My personal preference is a .387 or .40. I like 9mms and actually own one, but in most cases you're going to need to fire multiple rounds to drop the target. I trained on a .45 throughout my early years in the Navy and while I was able to qualify, I never qualified "expert" until I shot with the 9mm beretta. I've also tried a .387 and a .40 with friends and liked them best for since I could still get a shot off easy and accurately. The nine is even easier but less likely to get you that "one shot one kill". Of course I'm no marksman, but I do okay I guess. Someone with a lot of practice may be better able to handle a .45 than me.
