hello all. i am thinking of buying a glock g36 just to have around the house/ shoot for fun. a local gun store has one for $395. he also has a walther .22, and a taurus .45. i have bushmaster m4, and ive been shooting all my life, but this will be my first handgun purchase. im looking to spend around $400. whats some opinions on these guns and prices. and whats some others you would recommend for this price range.
I haven't shot the 36, but I think it would be a great concealed carry pistol. The double-stack .45's usually feel too fat in my hand and don't carry as well. $395 is a GREAT price...is this a new or used gun?

that price range, glock is your best option, just keep in mind it has no true safety, so hopefully your well trained in handguns.
395 wouldnt that be used?, normal price for any glock is $500-550
.22 is a joke, and I hate taurus, but there is nothing really wrong with them
Best handguns I own are Kimber, Glock, and Springfield
well, maybe i have the price wrong. the double stack was $529 i think, but i really thought the 6 rnd was $395. I never made the guy get out the taurus so im not sure what model it was, i just know it was a .45.
does anyone know how much smaller the g26 is than the 36? Id like this gun to be small and easy to shoot so my wife can use it also.
best thing would have her handle the firearm to see if it fits her grip. might want to take a look at the new S&W M&P. it has interchangeable grips so that you can swap them out for your hand size.
I have a springfield XD Sub-compact .40 that I keep, and love it. I like the feel of the grip better than the Glocks, but I would recommend handling both guns, and seeing which one you like better. If it's a defense gun throw the .22 out, and get a larger caliber.
If you plan on carrying I would check into the S&W J frame revolvers, they are light weight, and great shooting guns.
If I was going strictly for home defense it would be the Remington 870,
Tauras is a good bang for the buck home defense gun. It's been around a long time and it's not over priced. Grant it, Sig. Para., glock or excellent but pricey guns, if your on a budget the Taurus will be fine.

Have you shot the new Taurus Titanium revolver lately? i'm sure you'd change your opinion regarding Taurus handguns. I got rid of my nickel plated S&W model 36 J frame 38five shooter right after i acquired a Taurus 38 Titanium revolver. The Taurus trigger is considerably smoother than the S&W. The Taurus trigger feels more like a custom job right out of the box. i could carry this ultralight weight pistol all day long. i score 285 out of 300 maximun points consistently every time i qualify at the range. The gun is deadly accurate for a two inch barrel with the right ammo.
Taurus is imported from Brazil and they are IMO far more refined than Smith.
FYI ... the Glock model 23 .40 caliber is the one that Glock used to perform the most rigorous torture test in the industry. It passed with flying color comparing to more expensive handguns. i got one of those also.

the 26 is the same frame size but its a 9mm as the 36 is a .45cal.
9mm are worthless!!!!, I wouldnt go less then a .40cal, glock slides are heavy enough that your wife could control a ultra small frame .40 or .45 cal
just give her a chance to shoot it, so she knows what to expect.
I dont know what your talking about double stack, you referring to the magazine? no ultra small frames has double stack mags, those would be for full size frame 9mm in general.
Just keep in mind that Glock are not similar to the normal 1911 body style and that your wife understands there is no safety, you touch the trigger it goes off. I never recommend Glock to people unfamiliar to handguns.
All glocks regardless of model are around $550 new, $395 has to be used or an older model. Doesnt matter anyways
Glocks are the cheapest gun that I would personally buy, any other gun I consider runs at least $950.
Since this is for home defense and your wife need to use it, why not a semi-auto shotgun, like a used benelli
Ztalker
no I havent shot the new Taurus, they are good guns, just dont care for them-more personal then anything performance wise.
Also agree the Glock 23 will fire regardless of conditions, it was the first gun I ever bought. It gone though hell
SoulDesign
Also I suggest using a low grain round, since your using a small barrel you need to make up for its lose of speed due to small barrel size
I always use Speer Golddots

with the correct training, one gun is no more dangerous than another.
i got my fiance an XD9 for her first pistol. no different than a glock and she does well with it. me, i'm more of a 1911 guy myself. we both shoot AR15s as well.
Another note on the Taurus, from what I was told Taurus bought their molds from S&W for their own revolvers, and bought the molds from Beretta for their Semi-auto's. So you know the quality is going to be there with the Taurus.
