If you were going to buy a new gun just to take to the shooting range what would you buy.
My top 3 choices as of now are:
1. AR-15 with the bull target barrel, .223 cal
2. Desert Eagle, .50 cal
3. Some OverUnder Shotgun, Ruger or Weatherby
I have more guns than I can shoot as it is but I just want something to go to the shooting range and play around with. I was leaning toward the AR-15 but now I'm looking in to different pistols to shoot for fun and still have it for protection. My last gun I bought was an AL391 Urika shotgun and now beretta came out with a new shotgun this year that's supposed to be light years ahead of anything else. TO MANY CHOICES lol.

AR-15, I love that gun. My friend has one with a nice ass scope. I held a Desert Eagle the other day at the range and it seemed AWFULLY heavy for a hand gun and pretty damn expensive just for a range piece. But then again, the one I held was nickle plated and was close to 2 grand haha.
If I do an AR-15 I will more than likely build it myself. I just forget all the post-pre ban rules regarding them. I know there are quite a few companies that sell the upper and lowers to them. Prob. go with colt or springfield. From what I've read, the 15's with the bull barrel are deadly accurate. Some companies have claimed 1" groups at over 400yds.!!!

No factory rifle will claim that let alone being capable of that kind of accuracy. Not Colt, BM, DPMS, RRA, etc.
Springfield Armory doesn't make an AR15.
16" 1:7 twist mid-length upper is probably what you'll be after. If you want very good accuracy out of the box, check out RRA varmint line or NM models if you don't mind a 20" barrel.
You can always go custom. If you do, I'd recommend Wes Grant at www.MSTN.biz or Denny at www.globaltactical.com. Wes is currently building my AR15 upper. It should be done next month.
That would be the AR-10, I was up in the air between that and an M1A-Scout, I got the Scout, mags are cheaper!
What model Weatherby O/U were you looking at?

If you want something to play w/ I'd chamber it .223. Cheaper ammo.
Now if you want to reach out and touch something @ +500 yrd. Well that's a different animal.
It's big and heavy. Ammo is expensive and so is it. You're not gonna use it for HD, just for throwing lead down range. There are better options for that. Savage Arms Striker pistols are lots of fun. Rifle rounds in a pistol or you can look into the Beretta Storm or a 9mm AR15. Cheap ammo and a lot of fun. An AR15 in 9/40/45 is quite expensive though. I've seen the Beretta Storms go for under $600.

I'd vote for custom building the AR.
Actually, a 5.56 chamber would be better. It can shoot surplus ammo as well as .223. You can't shoot 5.56 ammo in a .223 chamber. That would be bad.
A lot of factory AR15s are capable of 500 yard shots.
