What is the general procedure with this when you are trading guns with a stranger? Isn't it best to meet at a gun shop where you can just go ahead and do the transfer? He wants to meet at a hotel or the airport..
I have met in parking lots and gas stations. I always ask to see ID and if the buyer is a convicted felon, the two things you must do to sell privately in FL. You DO NOT have to do a transfer, bill of sale or background check
JC is correct. If you are concerned about them lying about a felony and you want to cover your 6, offer to pay for half of the transfer fee/background check. Tell them that it covers you AND them since they will know that they aren't buying a stolen firearm. If they are against the idea or seem uncomfortable, then it's probably shady.
At the very least, get their full name, address, and phone number and toss it in a file with the firearm's S/N. If the cops come knocking at your door someday questioning you about the firearm because it was used in a crime, then at least you have some info to provide them.
This PSA was brought to you by your friendly neighborhood FFL
Personally i would make a copy of the pistol info serial number, etc. ask him for his DL and record all his info onto it. Tell him you want to keep it for your records, if he gets butthurt then go through the transfer at a FFL and have him pay for it. IMO local PD's should do a quick check for people wanting to do transactions like this, as it's for the publics protection.
