Default My range/accuracy thread

I just picked up my G27 a couple weeks ago and finally got to go to the range. I am pretty new to handguns, but have a lot of experience with shotguns. I started hunting at 12 and was on the Virginia Tech Clay Target Team when I was there. I bought a Beretta Cougar 8000F in February, but it was too big to CC.

Great fun and easy to shoot - I put about 200 rounds through it, but I wanted a cc gun. A local place had a G27 that was a police trade-in. I got three mags with it!

I finally got to go to the range with it today. I had a lot of fun shooting it. It was definitely a lot different than the beretta, but I liked the trigger pull better. It felt more mechanical, like I had more control. Kind of like the different feeling between an automatic and manual car.

The first 25 rounds were fired at 7 yards.

Not too bad, considering these were the first rounds out of it, and just over 200 that I have shot total through a handgun.

The next 25 were fired at 10 yards.

Not as good, I wanted to get a tighter pattern, but I will see how I improve at this distance with more practice.

The next 25 were fired at 25 yards.

I was pretty disappointed with the result, but I was having trouble holding my right hand steady for some reason.

For the next 25 rounds I decided that since I had never fired ANY gun left handed, I would give it a try. I am right side dominate with everything.

These were fired at 25 yards, left handed.

I was pretty surprised with how I did! I didn't think that I would be nearly as decent as it turned out to be.

I am open to any tips or suggestions on improving my accuracy (especially at longer distances), and I will keep posting in the thread more results from when I go to the range.

At longer range, a G27 is going to be tough to pattern well with.

But, look at the bright side, if you're carrying concealed, it's almost certain you'll never be forced to aim at a target more than 10 feet away. And hopefully, you'll never need to pull it in the first place.

Be careful.

Seeing as how the intended us will be for self defense, I'd keep the practice to 7yrds and in. You don't want nice pretty tight groups. If that's what you're getting, you're not shooting fast enough.

By looking at your 7yrd target, I'd say speed it up.

Since it's for CC, don't forget to work on your draw (drawing from concealment with a holster). Very important, easily overlooked.

I agree with the others. For self defense its all about speed and just hitting the target.

You have a couple of things against you here....the obvious that its a block(:P).
And that thing has what a 3 inch barrel? You accuracy is more or less going to suck at 10 yards or more.

Also remember really anything past 10 yards isn't going to be a self defense shot, and you'd have a hell of a time in court if a shoot went down over that.

I use a green gas airsoft Glock 26/27 with full blow back to practice concealed speed drills. It's the same weight as the real thing and keeps you tuned up in between range time.

Fyi, buy glock 22/23 (40 cal) mags as replacements. That way if you go through the intial mag. you can rely on your backups which have a higher capacity 12-15

I was wondering about the higher capacity rounds... obviously when I carry I won't be carrying those, but for the range/backup/home they would be handy. How can I tell what mags will work in my g27? Will any .40 mag work?

I like the idea of the g26/27 airsoft gun, where did you pick one up from? It would also serve a dual purpose of easing my wife into shooting.

The gun is for cc, so when I go back to the range on Monday I will do some rapid fire and post the results. With a 3" barrel I knew it wouldn't be that accurate, but I was hoping I would be as good with it as I was with the shotgun lol wishful thinking

Going for the 25 yard shot was just to see how good I was with the gun, not necessarily how good I would be in a situation of extreme pressure. As it was explained to me, you really only have milliseconds to get an appropriate shot in when killing in defense or else your case will become very difficult. I hope that I never have to experience that, but I will be ready.

Any .40 mag is good to go. You can even pick up a mag sleeve that will lengthen the grip.

I have a KWA brand green gas G26. Just google it to find the best price. I think I picked mine up for about $120 a couple of years back. Buy an airsoft pellet speed loader to go with it or you will hate reloading.
