I agree, it's kinda messed up. I think the only purposeful use for a .50 BMG is military. Against animals, standard hunting rounds should do (unless the animal is wearing layers upon layers of armor).

True, but there is a bit of a difference. While I think hunting is stupid (or at least the guys who think it makes them badasses), at least hunting accomplishes a few things. One is that it keep the population down, which is good because deer would be starving to death in the winters otherwise. Plus most people I know who hunt also eat what they shoot, so they aren't just killing to kill.
Comparing what Vick did to hunting (even with a 50 cal) is kind of silly, they really aren't the same thing at all.
