im researching hanguns and would like to find some informative reviews or forums on handguns. any suggestions??
i think ive narrowed it down to a glock 23/23c or 27. i might go down to a 9mm due to recoil?? so what kind of guns do you guys and girls have?
I have a Glock and love it. They are really really solid. Dont know where to point you...sorry. Try taking a look at the "Concealed Carry" thread that was started in Off Topic about a week ago.
Oh, mine is a .45 and the kick isnt so bad at all.

dont go down to a 9mm, you will get use to the recoil and will love the feel of more stopping power. you wil kick yourself if you go with the 19 or the 26. avoid the compensated pistols. they are useless for defense. if you've ever shot one indoors and in a dark room you would know what i mean.
Just some advice, try and shoot the gun before you buy it. I was set of the HK Usp, and then I shot the SigPro 2009...which is a whole lot cheaper yet felt better and was more accurate for me.
As for recoil goes, either way you'll get used to it. If you start off with a .22 you can hone your skills and save some money too.
If you are worried about the recoil, look at .40 cal. I have the glock 22 and 23 and the slimline 36 which is a .45.
When comparing "first shot stopping power" the .40 with hollow point high grade (something like 200) is 94% and the .45 with hollow point and something like 240 grade is only 96%. I would never bank my life on a 9mm, but that is just me.
I personally think that the Composite versions of the glocks are for non-shooters (that is a nice way of saying that you can't shoot worth a $hit). Yes, it makes it very easy to hit the target dead center, but it takes all of the fun out of learning how to shoot and shooting..not to mention like 2k3silver350z said, you'll shoot that one time when the light isn't good and you'll be wishing you hadn't bought a composite.
I admit that I am an absolute glock lover. It seems that you either love them or you hate them. I would never get anything below a .40 cal though...
Stick with a glock...you cant go wrong, easiest gun to field strip and very durable. Go with what ever pistol size you are most accurate with....caliber size is important but not nearly as important as shot placement! Your shots have to hit the target to count (or do damage). Also keep in mind if you are going to conceal your weapon a smaller gun will "print" less. Glocktalk is a good website to check out.
Oh...I conceal carry a G-19 (9mm) and feel that it is fine for me....In my concealed carry class I consistently got the best groupings and most shots on target in the fastest time from any of our testing distances.

ummm ... so what happens when you shoot it in the dark??
I own a 9MM Walther P99, and I think it shoots ok. Everyone else raves about them, so I'm thinking it's just me. I just have to practice i guess.
I bought a 9MM for the savings in ammo. This way I can go to the range more often and make it more affordable. However, if you are looking for a self defense gun I would probably go w/ a .45 since it does have more knowck-down power as most others have mentioned.
They do sell 9MM bullets that beat other .45 bullets in terms of energy and expansion. They are usually packed with more powder. Look at cor-bon as a prominant self defense bullet manufacturer.

I think they were referring to compensated pistol shooting in the dark....in the dark the compensated barrel that relieves recoil will let out a flash (usually straight up) and temporarily make your vision crappy.

try it will blind you. imagine being in a dark room at night if you miss the first shot you will be blinded by the 3 foot flame coming out of the top of the gun where it is compensated. it's not worth it unless you are just always doing target shooting and don't ever plan on trying to use it for self defense.
get at least a 40 cal. the more stopping power you have the more confident you will be when confronted (if and when it happens). just learn your local laws and don't be stupid and brandish for no reason.
Yes, I believe the "C" (compensated) versions have two slits on the top of the barrel that let out gasses to push the barrel down to compensate for the upward recoil.
As for handguns I have an H&K tactical and love it, I've shot a Glock before but nothing in competition so I really didn't get a feel for it.
I think composite stocks are a bonus, who wants a heavy gun to lug around, especially if you carry it on you. Plus it's one less piece to worry about rusting.
Why do people consider buying handguns?
1)protection???????????
Go to a self defense class. A kid cannot play with these lessons and kill themselves or others with them. A kid cannot take these lessons to school and kill other kids. A person cannot break into your home and steal the lessons and use them in drive bys or to impress their buddies with.
In some situations no matter how much or how well you know karate, kung-fu, etc. you will be as dead as the next guy unless you have a gun. Thank God these situations do not arise frequently or if you're lucky never, but its a nice feeling of safety (if you know how to use a gun and are ready for intense situations) to be prepared for self-protection.
Guns are dangerous I agree, but its up to the person and his/her wits to save a weapon for the last resort.
On the other hand, many people enjoy guns for sport. I enjoy going to the range and blasting off a few rounds. Sometimes it acts as a very good stress reliever.
The main theme in concealed handgun classes is to make you understand that a gun is for LAST RESORT only. I would say a good majority of class time is reserved for examplery situations of distress and danger. Then different examples are brought up on how to avoid these situations or get out of them without utilizing firepower.
Unfortunately, the more people I meet, I realize that too many of them do not have their wits about them. There are too many irresponsible people out their who own or wish to own guns.
As much as some of you may not like to hear this, I think that in order to own and continue to own guns, people should have to take an extensive course and then recertify every couple of years. People will find a gun if they want one badly enough; no system is perfect. But I don't think the screening process for getting a gun licence is as effective as it could be. I don't think they make it difficult enough to buy a gun.
Responsible, competitive shooters, I apologize for my rant.
People who own guns for protection--, you are going to die some day, stop living in fear and enjoy life until your call comes.
