I just picked up my first handgun (a Sig-Sauer P226 in 9mm) and am looking for a good internet forum dedicated to gun talk. I have a bunch of newbie questions (primarily related to care and cleaning of the gun for now).
Hraesvelg - My biggest question area is how/when to clean the gun. I have a cleaning kit with patches, oil, solvent and a rod with brush and other attachments but the directions are very sparse. If there is a how-to guide somewhere on the internet, that would be helpful. Otherwise I would appreciate some tips on when to clean the gun, what I should be doing, etc... So far, I put 100 rounds through it yesterday at the range and did my best estimate of a "cleaning" afterwards. It seemed to have plenty of oil on the moveable parts so I didn't add any. It was bought new and fired right away (dealer said that wasn't ideal, but shouldn't really hurt anything).
lbsohk1 - I got the gun in PA (secondary residence). Getting one in NYC is pretty much impossible unless you are LEO.
Yeah, clean it after you shoot everytime. Run an oil patch thought it first and then a wire brush with solvent, then another oil patch then a dry patch. I usually go from the chamber to the barrel with both so that any particles are brought out towards the muzzle. I never go back and forth with the brush or the oil patch, that just pushes the dirt around. Have fun with it! Let me know if you have any other questions.
If you have never owned a gun and know zip about them I recommend you join a club or take a NRA course on gun safety and care. You can never learn what you need to learn about the care and handling of a firearm over the internet or in a book.
ive just recently gotten into handguns myself and found a lot of good information on handguns on glocktalk. they have a section for non-glock handguns also.
Hraesvelg - What you describe is more or less what I did last night so I'm happy about that. Next time around I'll do it in the order you listed (I had done the wire brush first). Any suggestions about how often to add oil to the slide and other moving parts?
Zcool - I grew around guns (rifles and shotguns) and have spent a fair amount of time at pistol ranges, so my gun handling/discipline are not bad but I plan on trying to take a course to improve my pistol accuracy - I have already asked at the range for training classes. I still need to learn more about how to care for the gun since I never did that with handguns while growing up. Thanks for the suggestion.
DrDrilz - I'll check out glocktalk.
jovasi - I'm looking at my best paper from yesterday. Other than a wild one, most of the rounds are within 3-4 inches at around 10 yards. I'm planning on improving but this is already much better than I could get with my friend's H&K USP Compact .45 so I'm pretty happy.
Now I'm starting to think I have too many hobbies:
Cars/track driving, flying airplanes, motorcycles, home theater, now shooting pistols...
The bad thing about handguns is that you start craving more and different ones. Now you will have to get some type of 1911, and a 357 wheel gun. I started out w/ an HK USP 9 and then got a Kimber custom stainless. Be safe...
I have fired several Glocks(friends that are Cops) i love them but its such a hassle in NY long island where i live to get one, so i never got it, one day i will
There is a moderated newsgroup called rec.guns where all messages have to be approved by a moderator before posting, I think they are GREAT people there who give honest and acurate answers without any trolls allowed. You need a newsreader.
Nice choice of gun, I own that one and the P220 .45ACP.
I checked my slide the other day and just added oil , a thin coat on the rails it absorbes it pretty quick.
As for a full cleaning immediately after every time I shoot and I never use cheap ammo it blackens the gun horribly.
Use good ammo; cheap is OK, just have to clean a little more often, you're gonna do that anyway.
Don't use reloads you don't know anything about.
Don't overclean; clean the bore every time, break the weapon down only as often as necessary; keep the working parts properly lubricated (Militec synthetic based metal conditioner is great; 3-in-1 oil is fine)
Shoot the heck out of it; under all conditions you can. Then you'll know it will be there when you need it. You won't wear it out any time soon.
Keep it away from kids and fools.

Anyone think it's ridiculous if you're in Ga you can't buy a handgun if you're under 21, but yet you can go into the Army and carry one on your leg at 18? I wish they would change it to 18, I need one for my Z...

I thought you had to be 21 to buy a hand gun ANYWHERE. 18 for Rifles and Shot guns correct?
If you're using the Military argument, you can go fight and die for your country at 18, but you can't have a beer... Explain that one.
03 Z FOR ME...you are correct. It is a federal law that you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun or handgun ammunition.
I would comment on the beer and the handgun, but don't want to get off topic on this one.
Jason, I am a member of glock talk, same username, so if you have any other questions, let me know. Sounds to me like these guys pretty well know what they are talking about. Clean after each shoot. I too would recommend that you take an NRA course, or talk with some buddies that know a lot about guns. Simple gun safety can make a huge difference. Good luck, and if you want a glock, let me know. I can get one and ship it to your local ffl dealer.

id say georgia is one of the easiest places to buy and carry a handgun. you can literally obtain your conceal carry license without ever having shot a handgun. just go to your local probate court and give them $45 and thats it! no classses, no training, no tests! also, its perfectly legal to carry a loaded handgun in your car without a license. of course all of this only applies if you are 21 and have no criminal history.
