i also have a hole in my upper oil pan from my old vortech oil drain, Ill probably run a hose and T it into the catchcan as well and vent to the atmosphere.
I'd just like to point out that if you are venting crank vapors to atmosphere, your car WILL smell like a crapped out '89 honda !!!
I thought this too and had been told numerous times the same thing. However, I have had the crankcase on my car vented to atmosphere through a drilled-out PCV with catch can for well over a week now and I cannot tell any difference or weird smells/fumes. I do have a KN crankcase breather on the catchcan.
Edit: I will also add that there is NO oil in the catchcan so far. The car is driven approximately 20-30 miles daily. See's at least one or two 11-14psi 4th gear pulls everyday, mostly highway driven, some city too.
hmm, well I figured the drain hole was high enough that a crap load of oil wouldnt fill the tube up
At the Vortech tap location, you shouldn't have any problems. Not sure how high oil runs up the side in a high G turn, but as long as your hose runs upward from the tap location you should be fine.

most peoples perception of the crank case is similiar to yours.while running the cc is full of a heavy vapor fog of oil.this is precisely the reason o.e. vents from the valve cover(furthest point from crank).you can try,if the hole is already there and you employ a catch can it should function.but i would keep a keen eye on the resivour.with what you are proposing i would suggest a spring loaded flapper valve,so that it only functioned under high pressure situations.this would allow you to keep the factory set up functioning under normal operation.it would serve as a kind of emergency relief.
My car smells like furiously burning high octane race fuel. After taking out the cats I can't smell much anymore. Some piddly crankase vapors don't stand a chance of being detected!

Oil runs down from the heads so there is no dry place to tap the upper oil pan. That's the only issue I have with tapping the pan.

Nice, I was definately having oil smelling issues before re-doing my hosing, and it can be a little embarrasing ...
Oh really... So are you going to revert back and get a new checkvalve on the passenget side valve cover? Or what setup will you run now? I just blew on my pcv checkvalve and it really doesny seal completly....
