My FI story
Here I go..
Name is Johan from the Netherlands.
Here my FI story..
I'm already a reading a while in this forum about FI. And is there a lot of info in the FI knowledgebase here. I will post here the way it went for me and write the build process and and all the ups and downs of course ... This is my Zed as he now is.. with +/-220 horsepower to the wheels. (280 HP flywheel) that’s a little short on power to the weight of the car (my opinion).
*
After a lot of reading about Turbo systems I was going for a JWT TT (twin turbo) kit from the US.
A nice TT kit.. Everything fits like a globe, extensively tested and not a lot of problems and the experiences were good to excellent and you didn't need a lot of extra things. Best of all it can go on a stock Block with great risk that my block fails (there always is), and not difficult to set up because i have a garage where I can do everything.
While doing my research and questioning I accidently found *on EBay "for sale TT kit Greddy 350z". Price 2500 euro new…. " *??? that’s cheap must be something missing or wrong... but an quick email for more info can’t hurt. *But if it is something interesting then in the future I can get much more out of it than the JWT kit.
Greddy Turbo*
*
After a day. Mail received back from seller, *Info and Phone number...
He – Hi,
I – Hi, I call for the Turbo Kit.
To Make a long phone conversation to a short write. It comes down to that he had is the Turbo kit, intercooler , connecting rods and Pistons and purchased it from a Canadian for half price who had Financial problems, and he had to sell it unfortunately because he crashed his car on a wall, the car was loss so he bought a Corvette. We came to an agreement over the price and that I would pick up it up ... , And as a small bonus I get a short VQ35DE block.
A week later with the shuttle service from Rotterdam to Harwich. After some searching over there I found his, ... He had everything ready placed and said that he had found some more that I might be interested in ...Radiator, hoses, water meth kit, lightweight pulleys and a Tein kit incl EDFC. I bought everything for a small portion of the original new price. Packed in the borrowed Pickup car, and back to the Netherlands.
*
When I Arrived home, immediately unpacked the packages, viewed and displayed as a small child who had been given new toys from Santa Claus.
*
*
*
Everything back in the boxes and make a plan.
- Disassemble short Block
- Clean everything
- Short block and crankshaft with new pistons to be reviewed and machined by motor specialist
- Retrieve-Everything
- Assemble short block
Disassemble … no problem ...

With the disassemble I noticed that the crankshaft was damaged, there was oil starvation, but I brought everything to the motor specialist to see and measure all the things. Marco (the review man and that name you will certainly hear more) told me immediately that the crankshaft can be saved, but special thicker bearings need to go in, and that it would be difficult to get. But he is going to measure if the new pistons can go in.
*
There went a week over that I got a call from Marco . "And" I said? Well sorry is not possible unfortunately. I'll let you see when you're here. I went of course that afternoon I was there to see and Marco showed me the problem.
He got the block and all measurement data to let me see the results. Cylinder 1 to 4 were OK, cylinder 5-0, 2 mm and 6 even 0.6 mm worn out of oil starvation. so if we then still go on boring. But you will need to have other Pistons.
So I packed everything *and went to my garage. So what now.
A another Short block or crankshaft and new larger pistons or going to use my own block. Choices, choices and more choices.
Own block… no option ….. just 31,000 miles on it keep it as a reserve in case things go badly wrong with a newly built engine and we have seen it happen more than once.
Crankshaft and Pistons … That’s going to take a long time trying to get a crankshaft and buy new Pistons sell mine... I know in the us there a lot of you having that sort of things lying around.. but here in the Netherlands only 400 Zeds are driving round so that’s going to be hard.
I’ll go for a used short block if I can get that local or on EBay etc.. so that’s going to be a long search.

2 weeks later I read on the http://WWW.350ZCLUB.NL an ad from looking for VQ35DE engine ... I am looking for an engine VQ35DE (350Z 03-05). one with slight engine damage or a lot of miles that’s in need of an overhaul. It is for a learning project engine Disassembly/Assembly.
MMMmmm, I give him a mail.., I am also looking for a block. If you are offered something to new, preferably no engine damage. Here is my number..
Week later. "Hi Johan" I can buy 2 VQ35DE engines for not too much and unfortunately he sells them not separate from each other. 1 with something broken off of the block but reparable and 50 k on it with maintenance history and 1 who has had oil starvation and that’s where I’m interested in.
I said Ok. First I wanted to see *the damage. So we went to the Z salvage yard , and take a look at the blocks.
The Damage was reparable so we bought the complete blocks.
In the Garage in the motor mount and wanted to start ... but no time.
So a few days Later getting started.

We took the whole block apart, in the car and again to Marco. Immediately Marco saw that this looks much better than the last one. No damage on the crankshaft, de hone structure saw you still in the cylinder wall. So very positive all ... but we know for Shure only after measuring...
A week went by, and Marco could tell me that it all was good for the new pistons. After measuring the bearings *for the rods and crankshaft I can ordering the ACL barring’s.
ARPS Main and Head Bolts, ACL bearings and Gasket set from the US. And now but wait … … … … … … … … … After 3 weeks everything in house.
Still waiting for the block to get ready.

*
And Yeeeeahh it is back again. Now put it all together ...

Because I’am using the head gaskets of a VQ35HR I had to take a small piece alu from the block cooling passage...
*
*
Now everything wrapped up and to the garage. I purchased ... a Haltech from the UK.
*
And still a nice fuel Return Fuel System of APS including fuel pumps from ForgeP..
*
*
But now ... what will I do.. I have beautiful Nismo Cams but not the springs. So I ordered the springs upgrade kit... A BC kit it is then.
*
Let’s work on the Heads ... get the valve clearance in order. And clean everything.
*
*
*
Now to get it a nice Color Black…. Is black a color ? J.
*
*
The ARP head bolts in. ...
Heads on the block.

Timer chain installed.

I also have 2 20" wheels from my wifes car that I plan to make into a table, a willwood 355mm brake rotor without the hat for a clock and 3 good cams and 1 broken one that i was making into a lamp but the wife put the brakes on my automotive furniture .
