Default Another GTM Kit Install

Hey guys,
I never really introduced myself but I have been enjoying this forum deciding who to read who to ignore, etc. I never knew the market was so huge on the Z33 platform. My name is Jay and I have been a car lover all of my life. Specifically, fast cars...everything from modified domestics to my latest passion for boosted Nissans. I was the proud owner of a 1993 Nissan 240sx coupe that I swapped the SR20DET motor into. Did all of the work myself. It was a fun car but a near 20 year old car comes with other problems. I sunk a lot of money into the car. The only stock parts were the chassis, seats, and some of the interior.

I had kids and eventually decided to sell the car in December of 2009. The car ran high 12s on the stock sr20 motor, I became very good at driving the car and was achieving 1.7X 60 ft times...not bad for 250whp and a 4 banger

In order to get the wife to buy into my car habit I had to get something that was newer and nicer that she would feel good about riding in so I chose the Z33 platform. It is a beautiful car with a large aftermarket. After a few months of research I decided on the GTM Stage 2 Twin Turbo Tuner kit. Sam has been AWESOME to work with, I recommend him to anyone. I am very detail oriented and **** retentive and Sam has answered ALL of my questions and steered my path efficiently and effectively. Here is what has been ordered and should be arriving soon.

GTM Stage 2 Tuner Kit for HR, .86 A/R
GTM 3” Exhaust, Wastegates recirculated
OSIRIS Tune
Walbro, DW Injectors
OS Giken Twin Plate Clutch
Blitz SBC Spec-S Boost Controller

Due to time constraints, I am having Z1 Motorsports complete the install. I hope to have everything in soon and I will drive it up to Z1. I have spent some quality time on the phone with John about the setup. We are going to stay conservative at around 500whp max.

I will try to post videos, pictures, eye candy when its done. I'm usually very "media" oriented. The car is absolutely bonestock right now. It is a 2007 base coupe with 26k miles on it. I knew the previous owner and he babied the car. It is Carbon Silver Metallic, nice color.

Anyways, I have learned a lot reading here. thanks for the all the insight into this platform.

Thanks.
-Jay

GL and welcome... 500 HP is not conservative but is achievable. Conservative would be no boost controller running on waste-gate pressure alone making what it makes ... But GL either way

Love this short simple read. I can't wait to see what this thread brings to the forum. I myself have VQ35HR platform, can't wait to read another turbo journey. Thumbs up for you and your goals. Cheers!

Welcome to the forum.

I would keep it under 500whp.

I blow mine at way less than that.

Was that the stock motor before your build? I have certainly been concerned as I have followed your thread. I have thought about de-tuning the car to like 475whp. When talking with John @ Z1, he has dozens of HR stock blocks running around with over 500whp. I think Sam mentioned that Z1 has installed at least 14 of their HR kits in the last year.

Thanks.

Nice build. I would be more on the conservative side of 500whp on a stock block, even with it being the HR. I'm assuming you will be taking this to the track a few times like you did with the 240.

Are you just doing a pump gas tune?

Yea, it was the stock engine.

I don't know about the other HR's, but I drive my car hard.

i drove the **** out of my car at 530 whp on a DJ(11-12psi) and it was going strong at 6k miles when it got contaminated fuel in it. i think you just have terrible luck with engines XD midz350 XD. 500 is a good goal for a stock block hr with that kit! your going to really enjoy it OP!

Yes pump gas for now. I don't see a need for different tunes with my current power goal. I probably had over 100 passes in the 240. I'm wanting to take the stock ride to the track to see what I could achieve.

Other mods include KP Tech two step and no lift shift, light weight track wheels with MT ET Streets and the diffential brace. Running stock suspension and brakes for now.

Thanks.

You need a LSD and might need a DSS rear axles for the track.

I saw your negativity toward GTM and I don't know all the specifics of your situation. I understand that there is a risk you take with any store/kit but for what I am doing and the limited availability of the HR kits I felt like he was my best option. I like the fact that I can reach him every time I call and what he tells me correlates well with my previous knowledge of Forced Induction applications. I feel like the kit is made with quality components and is highly recommended by the shop doing my install.

I didn't ignore your comments but took them into account when doing my research. My friend here in Tallahassee bought a Nismo 350z with Sam's kit already on the car and that car has worked flawlessly for 3 years, it is an HR car.

There are rough stories with every manufacturer (even Greddy) so hopefully things will turn out OK for me.

I would be interested to hear more details if you care to share via IM. I have also been keen on reading your posts related to drag racing since you seem to be an authority on that topic. We share the same views on that topic so I very much consider your opinion on those matters as well.

Agreed and planned for. I was thinking about keeping a spare set of stock axles handy but may just end up running the DSS axles for the long run. I will be running a Quaiffe LSD.

Just a small update... I received 182.6 lbs of Turbo goodness this past week. I immediately unboxed everything and took an inventory. The kit came complete and components were marked in there individual packing then boxed in three large boxes. There was a "pick list" that had been QC'd as it was packed up. All couplers and BOVs were the right color (black) and the Garrett turbos were the correct version, .86 a/r gt28s. The only thing missing that I did not know about was the heavy duty slave cylinder that accompanies the twin plate OS GIKEN clutch. I will contact Sam about that tomorrow.

I have scheduled the install with Z1 to begin on or around the 19th of August. That is when I will drive the car up to the shop. By then we should have the remaining parts which are the recirc tubes, downpipes and the rear section of the GTM 3" Exhaust.

So we are getting closer and I can't sleep because I'm psyched up so I'm posting this update.

-Jay

I've never seen gtm actually deliver what they promised. With failures and problematic kit installations on everything from tt kits to s/c kits...
I'll put it this way; I'm saving up to go over to dynosty for my 'final' tune BEFORE I consider going to gtm. Im in the central coast of california. Thats about 2,000 miles away, vs in my state.
Not saying gtm is complete bs, but I won't give em a penny, and that's my 2 cents.

Do you have a build thread I can check out? Did you have any issues, how do you like the setup?
