greddy twin build...

I heard this on a youtube video but a side benefit (maybe only on paper or in a vacuum) of open dumps is there is a portion of exhaust gas that doesnt flow through the exhaust pipe and thus leaves more room for exhaust passing through the turbine, down the cats, through the Y pipe, and through the exhaust ... is it measurable - I'm sure it is but probably a drop in the bucket.

random thoughts of the thursday evening(should be self explanatory)...
I remember when I made 300whp...lol! ... 300whp was around 3500rpm...boi!
well shucks...the husky needs another knee...luckily it's not the one that's been modified...and good thing she's cute...cause if she was a 6 she'd get a cart...cash is king! fnck credit!
does anyone drink whiskey lemonades? g'damn I love them!
I think I got the equivalent of the '2010-rick-rolled' yesterday...a book about 'adjusting to corporate change' came through (internal) mail from an otherwise high-on-the-ladder manager from another department...turns out I got pranked...anybody read Nancy Grace's Secret Garden? Wow... I got an idea...
Had the car out Sunday decided to grab coffee...the drive there was as expected...made boost, maybe 5psi, near 60% throttle, up to 4000rpms(as verified on the haltech)? but the drive home I got a very very abnormal mental-on-metal vibration from the passenger side...inconsistent & intermittent... the only thing I could gather was it's something rubbing against the front passenger side wheel or its the blower...FORK!
Like I said...intermittent, I was essentially driving in a straight line...occurred on mild to hard accelerations, and down shifts...not so much on low-load cruising...beyond freaking out between the husky's new bionic knee and this sound I maybe caught 4 hours of sleep going into monday morning...
put the car up in the air and got the blower off and it's damn near perfect...no apparent wear on the turbine or compressor wheels / housings...deep breaths...
I had the compressor housings welded to the initial charge pipe...and how the engine sits there is maybe 1/16" clearance between the charge pipe and the (otherwise) OEM chassis... i.e. not enough
the nerd in me goes and calcs the thermal expansion of 4" cast iron headers from 60* to 1000* (no way in hell my EGT were 1000* but it's a pretty number)...16/1000" ... call it 2/100" ... probably not the issue...
but got the blower off and I can gain an 1/8" or 3/16" by re-welding the charge pipe...cherry on top will be installing independent boost gauges off the compressor housings of each blower...
side note: two doods here locally had autometer 20psi (4301) boost gauges ... bought both of them. Hat tip to member JDM-V35 for hooking me up with some quality 1mm vac hose line...
and of course I'm out of argon but I'll grab more tomorrow...
I think I can have it bolted back by saturday or sunday...

yeah ive said it before..do not weld the pass side pipe to the turbo. Run a coupler. You need some flex. Get solid motor mounts.
Good luck with the grind noise. make sure nothing is hitting your steering shaft.

^I cut it, rotated the pipe approximately 5 degrees and my buddy re-tig'd it...put about a 3/8" gap there. I'll post pictures once it's reinstalled ...
distinctly coming from the passenger side and the solid mounts are in. I'm fairly sure the steering shaft is clear...but I'll have another look tomorrow.
finished the oil filter bracket -

The husky got sliced & diced and she is doing well...
Everything buttoned up with the turbo and to calm my nerves I unbolted & removed the Y pipe and exhaust and ran the car about a half mile and the vibrations/grinding were not present. Best feeling in the world.
Got everything buttoned up and got the car out tonight - ran pretty good. Both my buddy and I drove it and we drove it relatively hard - 80% to 100% throttle rips. We got the blowers up to 5psi (per the boost gauges connected to the compressor housings).
around 5 psi boost stopped and I believe we could hear the waste gates opening and exhaust going through the waste gates.
It may be the BOV but the BOV spring was ~70% tightened down initially and I took it to 100% tightened down and ran the car with no change in boost pressure.
Waste gates have the standard red springs ... I previously assumed they were the 12psi large springs but I believe they are the 6psi springs...reviewing both Tials charts and the greddy instructions they come with the 6psi springs...
so I'll be ordering new springs...
thats all I know...

Nice work man! I'm gonna start pulling my motor today. I have a bunch of goodies to install and prepare for the dyno as well. Overhauling and upgrading the 20's with upgraded rebuild kits and billet compressor wheels. I have to install and plumb the fuel system CJM stage 2 return kit with 255/450 twin pump combo. Replacing valve covers, coil packs, knock sensor, 1000cc DW injectors, installing crawford upper plenum, ATI damper, sending the tilton twin disc to tilton to have upgraded diaphragm springs installed to handle more torque, installing dry N2O kit 50 shot, and have to wire everything up to the Haltech. There is more that I am missing im sure but hopefully I will have the car running and ready for dyno tuning next week.

^Thanks TT...as in upgrading to 20g impellers? That's quite the list - you got a build page?
Had a chance to get the car out for a little more driving. I was a little bit more aggressive pushing the car and it did very well. Very happy...ambient intake temps were around 55 degrees which made a very nice engine note. My engine temps were in the 160-180 range (which I'd like them to be a bit higher all things considered)...
a buddy brought a camera setup and took a few stills...enjoy...

Here's my build thread. Got the front end off yesterday and going to have the engine and transmission out today.

nothing yet...I'm having some discrepancies with my boost control solenoid where I don't want to push the car until I get it figured out...
Wednesday of last week I had a pre-dyno check where my tuner and I reviewed the car and test drove it to ensure it's ready for the dyno. I'm waiting on some cash to come in and I'll get my appointment scheduled.

^there was a 'Everyones Car Scene' meet that night and a bunch of subi's were rocking their BOV's as they blew by me - amusing to say the least ... I was literally just driving on the same road not showing anyone up, not gun'ing it, nothing ... but I'm sure they felt like the ****...
The z is over at my dads place as I have his car ... tearing down his engine as he's got a abnormal 'clink' coming from the front of the block (my guess its a crank shaft bearing or piston bearing - I'll keep everyone posted)
got bored tonight ... Jerryd shared some pics on chopping out the OEM trumpets out of the OEM plenum - obviously kills low end but opens things up on the top end. So I decided to give it a go. I'm also fixing to hack the 6 post out of the upper plenum.
I have a few extra plenums collecting dust, so if it sucks I can revert back to my unmolested OEM. Used a 4" grinder wheel to hack most of the trumpet out, a 24grit wheel to grind it down. I'll use the dremel to round-off the edges and then I'll use a much softer wheel to smooth it.
heres where it's at
