Default Cold air intake thoughts HR

Hey all,

Finally got around to mocking up in sketch up the two thoughts I have for the cold air intake..

Cold air intake thoughts HR-etjgmoz.png

First intake (on the left) intends to go down, behind the bumper

Second intake (on the right) goes to where the existing panel filter is with a heat shield on the appropriate side.

Thoughts?

Why not just buy a quality Injen CAI or JWT Popchargers?

Without the rest of the area mapped out those sketches really don't show much at all; bare minimum at best.

Do you have the fabrication skills to cut/weld the proper mate for the MAF sensors or are you going to somehow cut/re-use the stock plastic tubing (since they are part of the stock air boxes)? I assume that your proposed tubing isn't going to be plastic..? What conical filters will you be using and what are their dimensions..?

and my car was performing very well.

There is a ram effect of fresh outside air pushed up from UNDER the car straight into the two HR openings. Car is shaped much like a wing of a plane. Works the same way.

I kind of wanted to see if I could make my own and get any gains from it.

If I can get gains from it, it will cost me a fraction of the JWT pop Charger and INjen CAI

Shipping, handling, and taxes kill it.

Living in NZ has downsides

Nah g, just gunna reuse the factory pipes a

Sorry - fully forgot to reply to this last night.
I believe I do, however if I end up NOT having the skills, I have a great welder friend that can.
The tubing is going to be (most likely) intercooler piping.
Using HKS mushroom filters.

^^^ Intercooler piping? Again this comes back to where both MAF sensors secure themselves to the intake piping.. It's plastic. The stock piping is also permanently attached to the airbox. Are you going to be cutting the air boxes off and using a silicone coupler to attach intercooler piping..? Or... What?

These are just idea's that I am throwing up at the moment.

Intercooler piping, why? Because it is cheap, easy to come by and will function no differently than the plastic would.

I will have a look further into the car this weekend and figure out the plan of attack for the MAF's and mounting.

Hmm, if injens Dynos are anything to go by, I should be looking at a small Torque Gain.

Worth a shot, found a good/reliable place to source steel, so I shall mock some up this weekend, and see how we go!

What's up with your dimensions btw? 200mm diameter, that's nearly 8 inches.

The dimensions were most defs NOT to scale, they were there so that I could actually print screen a decent looking intake design.

Need to measure up the factory pipe size, and grab some steel that size.

The final will NOT be made of steel for a few reasons.

Weight being the number one

So, I started with this.

Pretty stoked for $30 (plus the poddy -_-)

Turned it into this

And finished it like this ;D You can see I have welded a plate in for the MAF sensor, in the same location as the factory one.

So that is quite obviously a very... Hori dori mock up.

But that's fine, it's airtight rah rah rah.

I have to make up one more of those, once I have done that I will have twin "pop chargers" if you will.

Once that's been done, I will get to work on finishing the CAI based off of K and N's design.

To prove that this was/wasn't a waste of my time, I will be doing a few dyno runs.

3 dyno runs with the car sitting totally factory
3 dyno runs with the "pop filters"
and finally,
3 dyno runs with the K and N based design.

I will average out each three sets of runs, and find out the final power numbers.

Hopefully this should all be done within the next 3 weeks.

So, I have found a way to get a nice 90 deg bend in without using a 90 deg bend silicone pipe.

Should have some money next week to play with it and finally (yuss) install it all.
