if you rotate it 90-180 degrees, will it shut off automatically?

I had that problem too. I turn the the nozzle clockwise so that the hose part on the bottom of the nozzle is going towards the rear of my car. This works 100% of the time for me. Just picture it like this, when you have the nozzle in the right way, you're at the 6 o'clock postion, turn it to about 8 or 9 o'clock and it should pump just fine.

Wow! I can't believe that nobody gave the most common cause for this. I know it was an old post, but you guys bumped it. The most common cause for the gas tank to not fill all the way is the gas station pump is programmed to stop at a certain $ amount. Many stations stop at $40, $50, and $75. This is a fraud mitigation issue. They want to limit how much someone can pump on a stolen CC and then cause them to lose when the real card holder disputes the transaction. With the high gas prices, my Armada and Titan take way more than those amounts to fill up.
Anyway, I'm aware of the TSB, but they mentioned that it wasn't their Z that had the problem.
Solution: Go to a different station that doesn't limit the purchase amount for pay at the pump.

I run into it 2 times per week. Once when I fill up my Titan and once when I fill up my Armada. The stations will fill to exact amounts $50 for example. they slow down as they approach the preset limit.
BTW, I'm not guessing on this. I own a company that supports gas station credit card processing.

I recently received an e:mail from a colleague. Essentially, he mentioned a few
helpful tips when refueling: 1. Try to gas up as early in the morning as feas- ible. 2. When setting the "trigger", place it in the slowest-dispensing notch thingy. 3. Don't buy gas from a station that was just filled-up by a "tanker/
trailer", 'cause it stirs up the debris at the bottom of the reservoirs, which in turn clogs up your injectors. Good luck.
