Default Gas gauge not working! car goes to limp mode!

i have a 2004 350z roadster. i purchased it about 5 monthes ago with no promblem. lately the car started going into limp mode once in a while. i took it to my mechanic and he said there was a code 1259 which he said was the gas pedal sensor. he had changed the gas pedal sensor along with the sensor on the engine. now my gas gauge doesnt work at all and the car is going into limp mode at least once everytime i drive it. i called him back and he said he had driven the car for about ten miles after the repair and he had no problems. he said i may have to take it back to nissan to get the ecu reprogrammed as well because he didnt have the equipment to reprogram it. has anyone experienced this? my mechanic said it was a common problem with the altimas. when i fill the tank it goes to half on the gauge and when i start driving it it will go right down to empty and have the dte flash on the dash.
does anybody have any input?

thanks
al
