Default SEL On but No Codes

On my 07 Z completely stock. Shortly after purchasing it the SEL light came on. Went to get the codes pulled but was not throwing any codes. So I reset the ECU with the gas pedal method. Three days later now it has come back and again throws no codes. I did realize there was a power cable connected to the battery that runs under the running boards, could this be grounding out somewhere and causing the code? Any help is much appreciated. The damn light it driving me nuts!

Did you ever read your owners manual? It explains what the Service Engine Soon light means. From page 2-15 of the 2007 Owners manual...

If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) comes on
steady or blinks while the engine is running, it
may indicate a potential emission control malfunction.
The malfunction indicator light may also come on
steady if the fuel-filler cap is loose or missing, or
if the vehicle runs out of fuel.
Check to make sure
the fuel-filler cap is installed and closed tightly,
and that the vehicle has at least 3 US gallons (14
liters) of fuel in the fuel tank.
After a few driving trips, the light should
turn off if no other potential emission control
system malfunction exists.
If this indicator light comes on steady for 20
seconds and then blinks for 10 seconds when
the engine is not running, it indicates that the
vehicle is not ready for an emission control
system inspection/maintenance test. See
“Readiness for inspection/maintenance (I/M)
test” in the “9. Technical and consumer informa-
tion” section of this manual.
Operation
The malfunction indicator light will come on in
one of two ways:
 Malfunction indicator light on steady — An
emission control system malfunction has
been detected. Check the fuel-filler cap. If the
fuel-filler cap is loose or missing, tighten or
install the cap and continue to drive the
vehicle.
The light should turn off after a
few driving trips. If the light does not
turn off after a few driving trips, have the
vehicle inspected by a NISSAN dealer. You
do not need to have your vehicle towed to the
dealer.
 Malfunction indicator light blinking — An engine
misfire has been detected which may
damage the emission control system. To reduce
or avoid emission control system damage:
a) Do not drive at speeds above 45 MPH
(72 km/h).
b) Avoid hard acceleration or deceleration.
c) Avoid steep uphill grades.
d) If possible, reduce the amount of cargo
being hauled or towed.
The malfunction indicator light may stop
blinking and come on steady.
Have the vehicle inspected by a NISSAN
dealer. You do not need to have your vehicle
towed to the dealer.

Did you even read my post? I had the car scanned for codes and none came up. Also car didn't come with a service manual.

The wire running from the battery... Does it look OEM or like it was added? I can't think of anything that would be running under the side skirts.

How are you reading the codes? The cheap OBDII scanners don't read everything. Might have better luck with something like the Consult.

The wire was definately added looks as if it was the power wire for an amp in the rear of the car. I had the codes read at Autozone maybe I should try somewhere else?

uhhh.... There is absolutely NO reason an amp wire should be running anywhere outside the car. From battery, through firewall, to amplifier.

Post pics. This sounds dangerous to me.

As far as trying somewhere else... It might be hard to find an independent shop w/ a Consult scanner. You may have to try the dealership

You still haven't said if the light is blinking or not. If blinking, you better be getting a code. You didn't say who was trying to read the code or how they were trying to read it. If no code, then it's not a real fault, i.e. it's something simple like a loose gas cap.

In these days of Google, there's no excuse for not having an owners manual.

It's not blinking. I've tightened and re-tightend the cap multiple times, I have a new one on the way. The fact I had no codes came to me in an epiphany, not from a OBD II scanner. The internet is a good excuse for being a dick.

Tightening the cap is not going to make the light go away immediately.


Maybe the previous owner had some serious problem with the fuel or emissions systems on the car that they could never solve. That's why they traded/sold it - after clearing the SES light first. You own it for a short time and now the light reappears for you just as it did for them. Problem could run a lot deeper than just a simple gas cap.

I manually reset the SEL, and its back again. Well I have a warranty on the car, if it isn't an easy fix. It's just that it is a 2 hour drive for me. Short of tearing out the motor and rebuilding it I am pretty confident I can fix it. Just need to know what it is first.

1. What type of scanner did you use? (If it is infact your epiphany, I suggest a therapist)
2. No codes mean you have no problems.
3. There is a code if the light is lit. If you do not believe me, continue guessing.

could be an ecu malfunction.. although very rare..

2. No "real" problems, i.e. no system faults. Still a possible "problem" as described in the owners manual - most common being loose or bad gas cap.
3. Code if light blinking. No code if light on.

If light is on, there is a code. Ask any knowledgeable mechanic, tech ,or whatever you wish you ask that has knowledge in this era.

I will have to take the car to a shop that has a better OBD II scanner, and then go from there. I'm hoping replaceing the gas cap will make it go away as it has not started blinking yet. Thanks for the help.
