Transmission Makes Grind or Weird Sounds in Cold
I have a 2003 MT 90k, yeah I heard worst year for transmissions.
I normally let my car warm up 5 to 10 minutes before I drive it.
Windchill was -15 here today and when I didn't warm it up this morning when I pushed in the clutch it made like a grinding sound like when its spinning its hitting something else or not fulling disengaging or engaging. But went away when was warmed up.
I know of no maintenance on the car.
Opinions?
UPDATE: Guess these noises are for the most part normal from what I have read.

I have an 03 with the MT out of a 2006. Mine does the same thing when it is under 20 degrees until it has time to warm up. I am unsure about what causes it, but it hasn't seemed to cause any damage.
I agree that they are mostly normal.

Has your Z ever received a tranny fluid change? Were you aware a change of the GL4 tranny fluid is mandated at 60K?
It's not hard to do and I'd recommend Redline MT85 as a replacement to help your shifting, cold or hot.

I wouldn't be concerned.
I have a 2003 with 95k. My transmission was replaced at about 40K under warranty. I experience the same noise you describe when the temperature is less than 20F. The noise goes away quickly as the transmission warms.

If it shifts OK then you have no problem. They are a bit noisy, especially when cold. FYI - my '03 Performance has 148,000 on it with original clutch and transmission. Minor grind going into 5th on occasion, only when shifting fast. I know its the syncro but I'll address that when the clutch finally gives way. Where in Ohio are you? www.zroc.org
