Got my car back! Time for repairs
Im burning tons of oil in my 03 Touring and I have read up on changing out the PCV valve and installing a catch can and breather. I dont think that would be legal in California so I decided ill just change the PCV valve. My question is: Besides the PCV valve, what else should I be replacing that would be legal?
My other problem is my fuel level sensor (I think?) Basically my fuel gauge always says im empty, which sucks because I don't know when i'm running out of gas. I have run out of gas on the freeway twice because I mis-estimated my fuel level . So today I got behind the driver seat and pulled out what I thought would be (according to Haynes) the fuel pump/level sensor. There was NO fuel pump, only the level sensor. So I took the fuel level sensor out, inspected it and then cleaned all the contacts. Reinstalled it. Still says i'm on empty.
Is this is a common problem with Z's? Whats the fix? Also, wheres my fuel pump located?

anyone?
Ive been googling stuff all day...Alot of people are having troubles with getting a correct fuel level but its not the same problem as mine. Theirs read 75% full when its really 100%.... Mine always reads 0% and very rarely tells me my real fuel level...Ill catch it giving me the proper level maybe twice a month but I look again and its back to 0%... I cant figure out whats triggers this..

The pump/sending unit is below the rear glove box. Try the google search with my350z.com. Good luck.

Actually, I just pulled out the fuel pump/level sensor from the glove box and cleaned off level sensor contacts and now it works!!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure if thats what it took to make it work...maybe it was the fact that I took it out and reinstalled it....maybe the cleaning of the contacts made it work......but yeah, it works now!! woot
One thing I should note is that the O-Ring was a *****...Youre supposed to put in a new o-ring when you take out the fuel pump, but im just working with what I got so I just used the old, swollen, oversized, stock o-ring.....I used a credit card to make it fit while I pushed down the fuel pump so that I can screw it down.....It worked. Im happy.

Dave - Your fix is likely temporary. You should be thinking about getting the bad O-ring replaced as soon as possible. If your car is an '03, then you're probably getting to the point where a new fuel pump/level sender assemblies should be on your shopping list, especially if you've been using econo-grade gasoline. There's a separate level sender on either side of the gas tank.
